Ravens, 49ers Favored to Meet in Super Bowl

We’re down to the playoff field, and it’s no surprise to see the Baltimore Ravens as solid favorites entering the wild card round. The Ravens became the Super Bowl favorites midway through the season and haven’t done anything to lose that status, so it’s hard to find fault with those who like Baltimore.

The Kansas city Chiefs have inched in front of the San Francisco 49ers for the No. 2 spot in the odds, although the margin is as slim as it can be, with the Chiefs +400 and San Francisco +410. The Chiefs may be a better team than the 49ers, but San Francisco should have an easier path to the Super Bowl, as they’d have the opportunity to play the NFC championship game at home, as opposed to Kansas city needing to win at Baltimore if the top seeds take care of business.

The New Orleans Saints are fourth at +650, which is lower than Green Bay even though New Orleans will be action this week, while the Green Bay Packers have a bye week. New Orleans is probably a better team, however, and it’s easy to see why the Saints are lower odds, as they would appear to have a much better shot of beating San Francisco.

The Patriots are the lowest odds of the AFC teams in action this week and they face a Tennessee team that is playing well after making the quarterback change, so it won’t be an easy time for New England, but it’s also hard to count them out.

Seattle is the lowest odds of the wild card teams and it makes sense, as they are slight favorites at Philadelphia this weekend and the Seahawks were a foot away from being division champions. For all the talk about playing in Seattle and the “12th man” the Seahawks were 7-1 on the road this season and just 4-4 at home, so maybe they’re better off having to take to the road.

Here are the current odds from 5Dimes as of Jan. 1.

Odds to Win the Super Bowl

Team Odds
Baltimore Ravens +220
 Kansas City Chiefs +400
San Francisco 49ers +410
New Orleans Saints +650
Green Bay Packers +900
New England Patriots +1400
Seattle Seahawks +2500
Philadelphia Eagles +3500
Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans +4000
Buffalo Bills +4500
Houston Texans +5000

My first early wager was a small play on the Vikings at +2500 and oddsmakers obviously weren’t impressed as the Vikings climbed to +3250, but then dropped back down to +2000, and climbed to +2300 after their loss at Kansas City. The Vikings dropped to +1800 after their win at Dallas, but as expected, they tumbled to +3000 after losing the Monday night game at Seattle. The Vikings dropped down to +2200 after a pair of victories, but saw their odds jump up after losing the Monday night game at home to Green Bay, which relegated them to a wild card team.
