The field goal kicker gets no respect, even on a stage as big as Super Bowl 52. The Philadelphia Eagles will try and pull off the big upset on Super Sunday when they go up against the New England Patriots. Like many of the Super Bowls that the Patriots have been involved in, it could come down to the last second. That is why it is very important to handicap the field goal kickers and the special teams for each team leading up to the big game. Understanding how good or bad each special team unit is, could make the difference in winning or losing. Another reason that understanding the field goal kickers is important is the football betting prop bets. Super Bowl 52 has countless pages of props available for betting and a good chunk of them feature the kickers.
The Patriots will send out kicker Stephen Gostkowski and the Eagles will have rookie Jake Elliot to handle all of their kicking duties. The kickers both attended the University of Memphis and they do have a relationship as Gostkowski has mentored Elliot during his career, but there is one thing for sure; they both want to win this game.
Gostkowski has had to establish a legacy out of a big shadow as he took over for Adam Vinateri who won the first Super Bowl with his foot that started this Patriots incredible run. Gostkowski had an unbelievable season for the Pats as he nailed 37 out of 40 field goal attempts and this included going 4 for 4 on kicks of more than 50 yards. Gostkowski is clutch and is third in career postseason points in NFL history so he is no stranger to the biggest kicks in the biggest games.
That stat makes this prop stand out above the rest.
S.Gostkowski points o8 -125
S.Gostkowski points u8+105
This price is a bit steep but the Patriots put up points in Super Bowls. If they are going to put up points Gostkowski will play a role and a big one at that. The over/under 8 shows that he can put up points and that will be no different in this game. The play in this prop is the over 8. Handicapping field goal kickers is also useful because many sportsbooks offer cross props where the Super Bowl is crossed with other sporting events. For example online sportsbook 5Dimes has props that cross Gostkowski and Elliot with the PGA, NBA and the NHL.
Eagle’s kicker Jake Elliot may be a rookie, but the kid has ice in his veins. He hit five of six attempts from at least 50 yards and he nailed a 61 yard kick to beat the New York Giants in week three.
There are multiple cross props for Elliot as well and of course single props that could be considered. The over / under for Elliot is 7.5 field goals made which puts him just behind Gostkiowski for total points. There is a head to head matchup prop that stands out as well.
J.Elliot points +½ -110
S.Gostkowski points -1/2 -110
If you think the Eagles win then there is a good chance that Elliot has more points. If you think that the Patriots win, then of course the play is to back Gostkowski to have more points. This could also be a prop that is used to hedge a side bet on the Super Bowl, if that is the way that you choose to go.
Looking over every angle to be prepared for the Super Bowl is always a good way to make a few bucks when betting, even if it’s just for kicks!
