The most heated rivalry in baseball will be on center stage to finish off the weekend. ESPN Sunday Night Baseball features the matchup of the two teams who seem to be moving in different directions right now. New York has established a big lead in the AL East, while Boston is trying to find its footing to make a run at the wild card.
Boston enters this matchup just below .500 on the season. The primary reason the team has struggled so badly has been their poor starting pitching. Felix Doubront has come from relative obscurity to lead the team in wins and ERA. Doubront comes into this game with 10 wins and a 4.54 ERA. It certainly isn’t a good sign for a starting rotation when the top pitcher in the staff has an ERA of more than 4.5. The Red Sox have gotten only 47 quality starts all season, and that is starting to wear down their bullpen.
Offensively, the Red Sox have been very good this season. Despite many injuries, the team ranks third in the majors in runs scored. Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford, and Dustin Pedroia are all back in the lineup after missing a significant amount of time. David Ortiz is on the disabled list, but he should be back in the lineup soon. Boston has gotten some great at-bats from rookie Will Middlebrooks this season. Adrian Gonzalez started slow, but he is hitting the ball well of late. This lineup should really pile up the runs throughout the rest of the season as they get completely healthy.
New York made headlines in the past week by bringing in Ichiro Suzuki from the Mariners. After Brett Gardner went down for the season, the Yankees decided they needed some more speed in the lineup. Ichiro should be a good fit for this team. The Yankees lead the majors in home runs. The team has swatted 156 homers so far in 2012. Curtis Granderson leads the team with 28 homers. Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter are hitting .320 and .311 respectively. Mark Teixeira had a difficult first half, but he has come out on fire in the second half of the season. He leads the team with 69 RBI’s.
The Yankees pitching has improved a great deal as the season has progressed, which has allowed the team to build a big lead in the AL East. New York has a solid team ERA of 3.67. The defense has committed only 50 errors this year, which is fifth-best in the majors. The development of the pitching staff has made the Yankees a much more complete team.
MLB Free Pick: Over 10
You would be hard-pressed to find two teams who hit the ball better than these teams. Neither of these pitchers is dominating. Look for plenty of runs once again Sunday night.
