The St. Louis Cardinals are at the top of a highly competitive NL Central. After a slow start, the Milwaukee Brewers are red hot of late. Milwaukee is 12-5in their last 17 games overall. The Brewers haven’t had much luck against the Cardinals of late. St. Louis is 4-1 in their last 5 games in Milwaukee. Each team sends their Ace to the mound for this one!
The St. Louis Cardinals come into this series at 17-11 on the season. Despite a bullpen that ranks as the worst in the majors so far this year, the Cardinals have been able to keep winning baseball games. Adam Wainwright had a down year last season after coming off Tommy John surgery, but he looks like he is back to his old self on the mound. Wainwright comes into this game at 4-2 with a 2.03 ERA. He has yet to give up more than 3 earned runs in a game this year.
The Cardinals offense hasn’t really gotten it going yet this year, but they are extremely dangerous. This lineup has a lot more depth than the average lineup in the majors right now. David Freese and Yadier Molina are often hitting in the number six or seven spot for the Cardinals. Jon Jay has turned into a very good leadoff hitter for St. Louis. In the middle of the order the Cardinals have Matt Holliday, Allen Craig, and Carlos Beltran. No opposing pitcher could look forward to facing this offense.
While I’m sure no one wants to face the Cardinals, Yovani Gallardo has to really dread going against the Cardinals lineup. To say that Gallardo has struggled against the Cardinals in the past is a major understatement. Gallardo is 1-10 with a 6.84 ERA in 15 career starts against St. Louis. Almost everyone in this lineup has given him a lot trouble. Huge innings from the Cardinals have been the undoing of Gallardo against the Cardinals recently. In a start earlier this year, the Cardinals put up 7 runs on Gallardo in the sixth inning of an 8-0 win in St. Louis.
Milwaukee’s offense has been hitting the ball very well recently, and that is what has fueled the team’s 12-5 run in their last 17 games. When the Brewers get on base, they are doing a lot of damage on the base paths. Milwaukee leads the majors with 26 stolen bases this season. Carlos Gomez and Jean Segura have been red hot of late. Aramis Ramirez just came off the disabled list, and his presence should really help this lineup. Ramirez has generally been a very good hitter with runners in scoring position. Ryan Braun is one of the best hitters in the game, and a lineup with him right in the middle will always be dangerous.
Free Pick: Over 7.5
Both of these offenses are very good, and with a number this low I like the over. Look for a higher scoring game than expected.
