The NBA trade deadline is just a couple days away, and several teams can help themselves by making deals to improve their chances of making the playoffs and contending for the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Whether or not any major moves actually happen remains to be seen, but the Eastern Conference’s top contenders would be dumb not to at least try something to pull them closer to the West’s best.
Right now, the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets are the class of the league, and it will be difficult for any team in the East to beat them in a seven-game championship series. Barring key injuries, the Warriors and Rockets will meet in the Western Conference Finals, and no teams really have a shot to prevent that scenario. On Tuesday night, you will get to see how the “Big Three” of the Oklahoma City Thunder stack up versus the defending NBA champion Warriors on their home court at Oracle Arena, and I will be very surprised if Stephen Curry and his teammates do not win by less than double digits.
As for the East, the Cleveland Cavaliers need to shake things up in a hurry in order to keep LeBron James around next summer, and the odds are against him staying there at this point. The Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors square off on Tuesday too, and both have a legitimate shot at dethroning King James and his teammates as the Eastern Conference champs, although they could each use one more key player too before the deadline.
Boston adding Greg Monroe certainly helps, but he is not the kind of impact player who can replace Gordon Hayward. If Hayward could possibly come back from his gruesome leg injury this season, the Celtics would have a great shot to top the Cavs. Instead, they might try to flip Marcus Smart for another wing player who is more of a scoring threat like Hayward.
