For years and years, the UCF Knights have tried to be like the South Florida Bulls. They can officially overstep their I-4 mates once and for all on Friday night when they can clinch their first ever spot to the BCS in school history with a win as nearly four-touchdown favorites.
The Bulls have turned into a real joke this year, and not a very funny one at that. From the point that this team was beaten and beaten soundly by the McNeese State Cowboys in Week 1, Head Coach Willie Taggart was already on the hot seat, and a horrid loss in this game might see him get run out of Tampa Bay just one year into his tenure. An offense which at least looked to have a little bit of promise this year has now scored just a total of 42 points in its last four games combined, and it hasn’t put up more than 13 in four of its last five games. The defense has at least looked respectable, but QB Mike White and this offense have been anything but. RB Marcus Shaw and his 5.4 yards per carry average is the most exciting part of this offense, though White’s growth could be worth something eventually. Still, the freshman who was supposed to be redshirted this year, has thrown just three TDs against seven picks, and he has become just a part of the frustration for South Florida fans this year.
The Knights aren’t going to be the best team in the BCS this year by any stretch of the imagination, but they are going to have their spot on the dance floor as long as they win one of these last two games. This is the one they really want, knowing that they could get to the BCS an further embarrassment their instate, in conference, and recruiting rivals at the same time. Head Coach George O’Leary has done a great job getting this team on the map, and with the breakoff of Louisville to the ACC next season, the opportunity is once again going to be there for the Knights to succeed. They only have one loss this year, that coming to a Top 10 team in the land in the South Carolina Gamecocks, and if not for that, we would probably be talking about this being a Top 5 team in America right now. UCF is led by QB Blake Bortles, who has 20 TDs against just five picks on the season, and he has made some real magic happen down the stretch of games, finding ways to win close encounters with the Memphis Tigers, Temple Owls, and of course, the aforementioned Louisville Cardinals.
Though the Knights are 0-4 SU and just 1-3 ATS all-time in this series, this is their day. They disposed of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights last week without issue, and we have to think that they are going to do the same in this one. With the national spotlight shining brightly, the boys from Orlando should post around a 34-3 victory or so against South Florida in what will be the biggest day in the history of the school.
