Patriots and Packers lead the way in 2012 NFL win total odds –  NFL Betting Trends- 2012 Highest and Lowest Win Totals

Most NFL teams are holding their mandatory mini-camps this month with the start of training camp still close to two months away, but that has not stopped some sportsbooks from releasing odds for all 32 ball clubs’ win total projections for this upcoming season.

It should come as no surprise that the New England Patriots at 12.5 and the Green Bay Packers at 12 have the two highest win totals considering they are both the odds-on-favorites to win their respective conference and meet in Super Bowl XLVI in New Orleans. However, if you are seriously looking to place a wager on this you have to examine the corresponding money lines for the ‘over’ and the ‘under’ in order to find the true value in this type of bet.

The money line on the ‘over’ on the Patriots’ 12.5 wins is +115 while the ‘under’ is -135. The first question you have to ask is will this team be better or worse than its 13-3 record from a year ago. All indications point to an improved AFC East which could cost New England a win or two along the way. Last season it played the NFC East and AFC West as opposed to playing the AFC South and NFC West this season, which could actually add a win or two. The bottom line is that 12 wins is probably in the bag so the value lies in the money line on the ‘over’ in anticipation of another 13 win season.

Green Bay streaked to 15 wins last season so the money line on ‘over’ 12 wins is -125 while the line on the ‘under’ is -105. Competition in the NFC North should also improve so the Packers could be hard-pressed to duplicate its perfect 6-0 run in the division. The AFC South is on this year’s schedule as opposed to the AFC West which could add a win or two, but the NFC West should cancel that out as a replacement for the NFC South. The bottom-line here is that Green Bay is still far and away the best team in the NFC so the value still lies in the risk of having to pay the higher money line to take the ‘over’.

The team with the lowest win total in the NFC is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at five. The Cleveland Browns have the lowest win total in the AFC at 4.5 followed by both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Indianapolis Colts at five projected wins. There is little doubt that all these teams remain in a major rebuilding mode and will struggle to exceed their total, however the best value in the group lies with Indianapolis. The money line on the Colts for going ‘over’ five wins is -130 and it is +110 for the ‘under’.

Indianapolis did draft Andrew Luck as its new franchise quarterback, but it has basically decided to strip this team of most of the remaining talent that led to all those 10+ wins over the years. Last year, the Colts managed just two wins with only Peyton Manning out of the lineup. Now, they closely resemble the 1998 team that went 3-13 in Manning’s rookie year. The value here clearly lies with the ‘under’ as four wins will be a stretch for this team.
