The San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies will close down their regular-season series with a three-game set at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, so here’s the best Giants vs. Rockies betting pick for Friday, September 24, 2021.

San Francisco is 12-4 against Colorado in 2021. The Giants are firm favorites for Friday’s clash, according to Bovada Sportsbook, as San Francisco continues its battle for the NL West title, while the Rockies have nothing to play for.

The Giants aim for their fifth straight win over Colorado

Excluding their Thursday’s game against the Padres in San Diego, the San Francisco Giants have won 13 of their previous 16 games at any location, including a three-game sweep over the Rockies at Coors Field earlier this month. They improved to 99-53 on the season following an 8-6 win at the Padres this past Wednesday and remained top of the NL West, a couple of games ahead of the LA Dodgers.

In their last 12 outings, the Giants have scored 74 runs while posting the second-best OPS in the majors (.874). On the pitching side of things, they’ve registered a solid 3.52 ERA to go with a 1.26 WHIP and a .269 batting average against.

Alex Wood will get the starting call Thursday, and he’s 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA and a 17/5 K/BB ratio in three starts (17.2 innings) against the Rockies this season. The 30-year-old southpaw is 10-4 with a 3.99 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 24 starts in 2021, and over his previous four outings, Wood has recorded a 2.70 ERA and 2.46 FIP across 20 frames of work.

The Rockies hope to finally beat the Giants at Coors Field

Excluding their Thursday afternoon’s home clash against the Dodgers, the Colorado Rockies have dropped five of their previous six outings at Coors Field which is quite surprising, considering how dangerous they’ve been at home all season. Also, the Rockies are winless in three straight home encounters with the Giants.

Still, Colorado has won eight of its previous 11 contests overall, tallying a 3.83 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and a .253 batting average against. The Rockies have scored 61 runs in that span, slashing .255/.329/.454, enough for the ninth-best OPS in baseball.

Peter Lambert will take the mound Thursday against the Giants, making his first major-league start since 2019. The 24-year-old right-hander will return from Tommy John Surgery, so he shouldn’t last for more than a few innings. Lambert racked up 19 starts in 2019 as a rookie, posting a 7.25 ERA and 1.73 WHIP across 89.1 innings of work.

Trends:

San Francisco:

  • 13-3 in the last 16 games overall
  • 7-1 in Alex Wood’s last eight starts

Colorado:

  • 1-5 in the last six games at home
  • 1-6 in the last seven games against San Francisco

San Francisco Giants vs. Colorado Rockies Pick

The Giants have been terrific at the plate as of late, so I’m expecting them to hit hard and well against Peter Lambert, who’ll try his best to give the Rockies a solid performance. Lambert will have a tall task against one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball, but Alex Wood will have a difficult job, too, as the Rockies’ offense has worked well over the last few weeks.

We should see an interesting clash, and I’m backing the visitors to come out on top. The Giants bullpen has registered a 3.16 ERA and 3.93 FIP in the past two weeks, while the Rockies ‘pen has posted a 2.91 ERA and 4.18 FIP in that span, so I’m looking for Alex Wood and the Giants’ offense to make the difference.

Pick: Take San Francisco Giants

The Total:

The previous three encounters between these two foes at Coors Field saw the Giants winning 7-4, 12-3, and 10-5, so I’m backing the over on the totals. I don’t trust Peter Lambert to pitch well against the red-hot Giants’ bats, while the Rockies’ bullpen has been overperforming lately and will easily struggle in this matchup.

The over has hit in nine of the last 13 meetings between the Giants and Rockies. This betting trend should go on Friday.

Pick: Go over
