College Football Betting Favorite: San Diego State -4
The San Diego State Aztecs and Air Force Falcons will get a rare chance at getting some national viewers this Thursday night. Both of these teams have been very successful in the past few years, but this year hasn’t been kind to either team thus far. Which one of these teams will get back on track with a win this week?
San Diego State picked up a 51-44 overtime win over Nevada last week. The Aztecs were in control of that game before blowing a big lead in the fourth quarter. They then recovered to pull the game out in overtime. Two of San Diego State’s three losses have come against Ohio State and Oregon State, so they have played a difficult schedule thus far. The Aztecs have switched starting quarterbacks. Adam Dingwell didn’t play well, and it has been Quinn Kaehler who took over for Dingwell. Kaehler has thrown six touchdowns and three picks. Adam Muema is a good runner, but he is averaging just 3.4 yards per carry. Defenses have been keying in on the run against San Diego State.
The Aztecs defense has been good against the run, but they have been getting torched by good passers. The good news for them this week is Air Force cannot throw the football. The Falcons do know how to execute the triple option very well though, so San Diego State will have plenty to prepare for in this short week of practice.
Air Force was beaten soundly last week by Navy in a rivalry game. The Falcons running defense has been letting them down all year, and they just couldn’t stop Navy when they needed to last week. The Falcons are badly undersized on the defensive line, and that has really hurt them in the past couple years. Opponents are averaging 222.5 yards per game on the ground. Overall, Air Force is allowing 39.3 points per game this season. It is very tough to win games when the defense is allowing 39.3 points per contest. This defense is going to have to get better in a hurry.
The Falcons offense is now under the leadership of quarterback Karson Roberts. Roberts became the starter after Jaleel Awini was kicked off the team a couple weeks ago. Roberts is still learning the position, but he has shown some flashes of brilliance early on. Air Force is all about the running game. The Falcons have six players on their roster with at least 100 rushing yards this season. Air Force is averaging 285.2 yards per game on the ground as a team so far in 2013. They’ll have to get the running game going against a pretty good San Diego State front seven.
Free Pick: Air Force +4
San Diego State is down a few notches from last year. Air Force still plays hard the entire game, and I think they are a good value here as a home underdog.
