San Antonio finds itself just two more wins away from another trip to the NBA Finals after knocking-off Memphis 105-83 in Game 1 as a 4.5-point home favorite followed by a thrilling 93-89 overtime victory as a 5.5-point favorite at home this past Tuesday night. The total went OVER in both of those games.
This series could have very easily been tied at a game apiece after the Spurs blew a 13-point fourth quarter lead, but Tim Duncan stepped-up big in the extra period with six of the team’s eight points which proved to be enough to secure the win. He ended the night with 17 points and nine rebounds while Tony Parker chipped-in 15 points while dishing-out a career playoff-best 18 assists. The Spurs only hit 43.4 percent of their attempts from the field on Tuesday night after lighting up the scoreboard with a 52.6 shooting percentage in Game 1. The main takeaway from these two games has to be San Antonio’s ability to beat you in a number of different ways.
Memphis has been down this road before in these playoffs after falling behind 0-2 to the Los Angeles Clippers in the opening round and losing Game 1 of the conference semifinals to Oklahoma City. While the Grizzlies may have all the confidence in the world that they have the ability to turn things around on their home court, unless they start shooting the ball much better than they have in the first two contests this could be a much shorter series than expected. After hitting 43.2 percent from the field in Game 1, that number dropped to a woeful 34 percent in Tuesday night’s setback.
It is obvious that it would be very difficult for Memphis to match the Spurs point-for-point in a high-scoring shootout, so the other key to cutting the series deficit in half is tightening things up on defense. This has been this team’s bread and butter all season long after finishing the regular season ranked first in the NBA in points allowed (89.3). The Grizzlies did not give-up more than 93 points in eight of their first 11 postseason games and they will need to get back that physical style of play to have chance of winning on Saturday night.

Memphis fully realizes that a loss in Game 3 would all but mean an end of its run to the NBA Finals. The Grizzlies have shown the ability to elevate their game when they have needed to the most. I fully expect them to come away with the straight-up win on Saturday night but given San Antonio’s current form, the free NBA pick is with the Spurs and the 5.5 points.
Memphis 94 San Antonio 92
