Pointspread: New England -2.5
Total Line: 49.5
The return of Coach Sean Payton after a one-year NFL imposed suspension has made all the difference in New Orleans as the high flying Saints are off to a 5-0 straight-up start and a profitable 4-1 start against the spread. While they are known for their potent offensive attack, the total has stayed UNDER in four of their first five games behind a vastly improved defense.
This unit was ranked near the bottom of the NFL last season in almost every major category, but heading into this showdown the Saints’ defense is ranked 12th in total yards allowed (330.4) and fourth in points allowed (14.6). With Drew Brees still at the helm, the Saints’ offense is still one of the best in the league. It is ranked second in passing with an average of 327.2 yards a game and Brees is completing 69.7 percent of this throws. This has added up to an average of 26.8 points a game, which is ranked ninth in the NFL.
The Patriots are off to a solid 4-1 SU but they are just 2-3 ATS. They suffered their first loss of the season last Sunday in a 13-6 setback to Cincinnati as two-point favorites on the road. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their five games as their normally high scoring offense has been grounded this season behind a passing game that is ranked 21st in the league. This is to be expected when you add up all the production that New England lost this past offseason in its receiving corps.
The one big plus for this contest could be the return of All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski to the starting lineup. He has missed the first five games due to injury, but preliminary reports out of Foxborough this week all point towards him playing in this crucial inter-conference clash. The other plus from the offense’s struggles this season has been a defense that has been able to step up its game. It is ranked 16th in the NFL in total yards allowed, but it is ranked second in points allowed (14.0).
Free NFL Pick
This should be a great game between two teams that matchup against one another extremely well. The top play in this one could be the UNDER on the total line, but the free NFL pick on the side would be with New England covering the 2.5-point spread.
