The playoff push continues on Wednesday in NHL betting action when the Pittsburgh Penguins play host to the Detroit Red Wings on NBC Sports Network at 8:00 p.m. ET on the ice inside the CONSOL Energy Center. This is a must-win game for the Red Wings who are fighting for their playoff lives against the Penguins who are cruising into the second season.
The Red Wings pulled off a 4-2 victory over the lowly Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night to keep their playoff chances alive with just a few games left on the schedule. Detroit led the game by a 3-2 score in the final minute before an empty netter provided the puck-line cover and game sealing goal. A win in this game would most likely secure a playoff spot for this team as the Washington Capitals would have to win out to catch them in the standings and have them lose the remainder of their games. The Red Wings have been playing solid hockey of late winning five of their L/6 games including victories over the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins who are both playoff teams. The play of RW Daniel Alfredsson has led this offense he has put up 48 points on 18 goals and 30 assists this season. Detroit could get a huge boost in the next week or so as its leading man LW Henrik Zetterberg is set to return from a back injury just in time for the playoffs.
The Penguins are playing strictly for show these days as they can do no worse or better than the No. 2 slot in the playoff seeding. On Sunday they survived a scare from the Colorado Avalanche in a 3-2 shootout victory in the Mile High city. Another amazing season from C Sidney Crosby has this team once again knocking on the door for a Stanley Cup. Crosby has 102 points on 36 goals and 66 assists on the year. He will most likely make a return in this game after missing Sunday’s game with what is being called a minor upper body injury. The Penguins have been a very difficult home team to beat this season with a record of 27-9-2 when playing in the Steel city. Their sixth ranked offense scores 3.0 goals per game while their 8th ranked defense allows just 2.5 goals per game. If Pittsburgh can get its No. 2 ranked power play going in this game it will be tough for Detroit to stop this team that scores on 23.3 percent of its chances with the man advantage.
The Red Wings will be desperate to get this victory and that has to be taken into account when figuring just how much ice time Crosby and the Pens other key players will get in this game. We like Detroit to pull off a win in Pittsburgh behind another solid effort from Alfredsson. The Red Wings defeated the Penguins 5-4 in overtime of the last meeting back on March 20th and they are fully capable of pulling off this win on the road.
