Two of the best teams in the American League East will meet in Major League Baseball betting action when the Boston Red Sox face the New York Yankees Thursday night at 7:05 ET at Yankee Stadium on the MLB Network. This will be the first meeting of the season between these two storied rivals as they meet in the Bronx.
The Red Sox got a 4-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday to record their second victory in the rubber game of a three game series. An eighth inning three run bomb by David Ortiz powered Boston’s win as it earned its second home win of the season. It was the second homer of the season for Ortiz who is strictly batting DH these days at 38 years old, he is batting .238 and has knocked in eight runs thus far. The Red Sox have a powerful lineup that includes a talented list of sluggers averaging just 3.89 runs per game. They will need to get things going in New York this weekend to get some wins over the Bronx Bombers. The good news for Boston is ace Clay Buchholz will be taking the hill in the opening game of this series. Buchholz had a rough first outing of the year as the Milwaukee Brewers ripped him for six runs on 13 hits in a 7-6 Red Sox loss at Fenway Park last Saturday. They will obviously need a much better performance out of him in this game.
The Yankees lost their second straight game against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday in a 5-4 heartbreaker. Their newest pitching addition Masahiro Tanaka made his first start at Yankee Stadium and played well striking out 10 Orioles giving up just three runs and seven hits. New York right fielder Carlos Beltran had a solid game going 3-for-3 scoring two runs and knocking in another. Third baseman Kelly Johnson has been a key pickup as he has two homeruns in his new home. Going to the bump for the Yankees in this game will be 25 year old right hander Michael Pineda who is the last pitcher in the team’s rotation. He had a strong first outing of the year retiring 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced in a 4-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays where he allowed just one run on five hits. The Yankees will hope for a similar effort from Pineda who had not started a game in the majors since September 21st, 2011 before this season.
The Red Sox and Yankees are bound to play a pretty tight game in this one as Buchholz will most likely rebound from a rough first start of the year. We expect to see some late game heroics from the Boston lineup again in this one as it is 36-15 in Buchholz’s last 51 starts on the road. Look for some runs to be scored in this game, but the Red Sox will be just a little too much for the Yanks to handle on Thursday.
