Match-up: West Ham at Manchester United
Time: 11:00 EDT
Spread: MAN -1.5
Total: 2.75 Goals
Manchester United might not have had a very productive season in the Premier League, but they captured the FA Community Shield, the EFL Cup and the Europa League. They are now starting their new season when they play host to West Ham on Sunday, August 13th. West Ham finished at the top half of the Premier League table in a mediocre season for them.
Manchester United finished at the 6th spot of the Premier League last season (18-5-15), and they were going to miss the Champions League, but they captured the Europa League. That gave them a wild-card for the Champions League Group Stage this season, while they also captured the EFL Cup, and earlier in the season they had also captured the FA Community Shield. They only brought a handful of players for the new season, as they acquired Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku from Everton, Nemanja Matic from Chelsea and Victor Lindelof from Benfica. However, they lost two of their best forwards, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic is no longer with the club, while Wayne Rooney returned to Everton, among others. They played numerous friendlies in the off season, where they actually looked great (5-1-1), but fell to Real Madrid by 1-2 in the European Super Cup final.
On the other hand, West Ham are coming off a pretty mediocre season, as they finished at the 11th spot of the Premier League (12-17-9), having scored 47 goals against 64 conceded. They were not very good on the road (5-9-5), where they scored 28 goals against 33 conceded. West Ham made numerous changes in their roster in the off-season, as they made some very good signings. They brought in Pablo Zabaleta and Joe Hart from Manchester City, and forwards Marko Arnautovic from Stoke and Chicharito from Bayer Leverkusen. Moreover, they parted ways with 17 players, as others were released, while others were sold to German and English teams. West Ham played 6 friendlies in the off-season, where they didn’t have much luck (1-2-3), keeping just a single clean sheet in a goal-less draw against an amateur team.
Manchester United won both matches last season, and they have generally been excellent in this match-up. They have been dominant as hosts in this match-up over the years (15-3-3), having not lost here since 2007. West Ham have made some excellent additions to their roster in the off-season, especially up front, and if anything, they can contribute towards the Over 2.5 Goals.
Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals (-139).
