Newcastle did an excellent job in the Championship last season, but they also needed some luck in the final match-day in order to capture the title. Even so, they managed to capture the title, and they are now starting their Premier League bid when they play host to Tottenham on Sunday, August 13th. Tottenham were amazing last season, as they finished at the 2nd spot of the Premier League.
Newcastle really did deserve to be promoted to the Premier League, as they were a dominant force in the Championship last season. They finished at the top spot with 94 points after 46 matches (29-10-7), where they scored 85 goals against 40 conceded. They did need a lot of luck in order to do so though, as Brighton were held to a draw in the final match-day, enabling Newcastle to move to the top spot. Newcastle were very good at home (15-5-3), where they scored 49 goals against 23 conceded. Newcastle were great in the off-season friendlies (4-1-1), where they held just a single clean sheet though. They were improved in the transfer window as well, as they brought in Atsu from Chelsea, Manquillo from Atletico Madrid and Merino from Dortmund among others.
On the other hand, Tottenham are coming off a great season in the Premier League, as they managed to easily finish at the 2nd spot of the Premier League (26-4-8), where they featured the best offense with 86 goals, paired with the best defense with just 26 conceded. Moreover, they were quite strong on the road (9-4-6). Tottenham were not very active in the transfer window so far, as they haven’t made any signings yet, keeping their core intact. However, they did lose some players like Njie, Fazio and Walker, but they were not in the coach’s plans for the new season. They played 5 off-season friendlies, where they defeated Juventus, Paris Saint Germain and a regional side, but lost to Roma and Manchester City.
After a one year stint at the Championship, Newcastle are back in the Premier League, and they have actually been excellent as hosts against Tottenham over the years (12-5-4). The last time that these two met was back in the 2015-16 season, where Newcastle actually won both matches. Matches between the two traditionally produce a lot of goals, so I think that we will see goals from both sides here.
Prediction: Both Teams to Score (-131).
