Playoff CFL Pick & Prediction: Edmonton at Calgary

Last Updated: 2017-11-19

The nightcap North of the Border is a pretty decent game between the Edmonton Eskimos and the Calgary Stampeders. The Stampederes are favored by 5 and the total on this one is 52. Who you like in this game will pretty much be determined by how much stock you put in Calgary’s three-game slide to end the season after they had wrapped up the West title and home field throughout the playoffs.

At one time the Stampeders were 13-1-1 and the line on this game would have been more than a touchdown, but three losses and a six-game winning streak actually have more people betting on the Eskimos than they do the Stamps. One of Calgary’s three losses to close the season was to Edmonton.

If you ask the Stampeders, it was a matter of gearing up for this game, although you really wouldn’t expect them to say any differently. But turning the switch back on doesn’t always work out, although their three-game slide didn’t stop them from having the best defensive numbers in the league, which they’ll need against the league’s best passing attack.

But Calgary’s defense was on another level this season, allowing 349 points. The team which allowed the second-fewest points was Saskatchewan with 430. Calgary tied for the league lead in sacks and the Eskimos allowed the most sacks in the league, but also threw for the most yards in the league and were second in rushing. The Stampeders allowed 81 points over their last three games and averaged just 10.7, so the defense was on the field longer than usual and also defending shorter fields.

The first game between the two is probably the most indicative and Calgary posted a 39-18 victory. The teams met again just five days later and the Stampeders pulled out a 25-22 road victory, which led to the Eskimos’ victory at home the end of October. The Stampeders were a better home team during the season, while the Eskimos were pretty comparable at home or away this year.

Calgary’s defense had a tendency to play particularly well in division games and the Stampeders were just 1-9 in totals in those contests and think the real Stampeders will return to action today. The team has gone 5-1ATS after a bye over the past three years and think they’ll make a bit of a statement today. Will go ahead and lay the five points with the home team in this spot.
