American League Division Series Capsules (Monday, October 3rd)

Final Score: Texas 4, Tampa Bay 3

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers are one win away from the ALCS after holding off the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-3, in Game 3 of their AL Division Series at Tropicana Field. Down 1-0 in the seventh, Mike Napoli sparked a four-run inning with a two-run homer. Later in the frame, Josh Hamilton knocked in two runs with a single. Texas, which holds a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series, will try to close out the set Tuesday afternoon with Matt Harrison on the mound. Desmond Jennings had two solo homers for the Rays, who are trying to become the first AL or NL Wild Card team to reach the World Series since the 2006 Tigers lost to the Cardinals. Jeremy Hellickson will get the ball for the Rays on Tuesday.

Final Score: Detroit 5, New York 4

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Delmon Young's tie-breaking solo home run and Justin Verlander's mighty eight-inning performance has sent the Detroit Tigers to the brink of eliminating the New York Yankees from the postseason. Young, who was acquired from Minnesota on August 15, homered to right field off Rafael Soriano with one out in the seventh, providing the Tigers with a 5-4 victory in the pivotal Game 3 of their American League Division Series. Verlander (1-0), the expected choice for this year's AL Cy Young Award, piled up 11 strikeouts over his 120-pitch effort. The powerful right-hander, who allowed six hits and four runs with three walks, touched triple-digits on the radar gun into the eighth inning, helping the Tigers grab a 2-1 series lead. Jose Valverde walked Jorge Posada and Brett Gardner in the ninth, but Derek Jeter swung through a 2-2 pitch to end the game. CC Sabathia labored through 5 1/3 innings in the start against Verlander for the second time in four days, walking six batters and giving up seven hits and four runs. The Tigers, who beat the Yankees in four games in the 2006 ALDS, have an opportunity to finish the job Tuesday at 8:37 p.m. (et), again at Comerica Park. The AL East champions will send A.J. Burnett to the mound, while Detroit goes with Rick Porcello.
