Rivers vs Ravens

San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers absolutely dissected the Ravens' defense last season, and he didn't even need a scalpel. Just a strong throwing arm to deliver shots downfield as he connected on 17 of 23 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown.

Although Rivers remains capable of inflicting damage on the Ravens' vulnerable defense, he hasn't been himself this season, for the most part.

Yes, he's completed 67.1 percent of his throws for a respectable 2,461 yards and 17 touchdowns. However, he's also thrown 14 interceptions and has been sacked 26 times as he works behind a porous offensive line.

He has weapons to exploit in Malcom Floyd, Antonio Gates and Danario Alexander, but none of those players are as dangerous as Vincent Jackson, who's now a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Batch Goes for the Steelers

The Steelers are down to third-string quarterback Charlie Batch, a 37-year-old that is 65 in NFL years. Byron Leftwich took a lot of shots last week in relief and if the offensive line can’t stand tall and put up a wall, it will be the recently signed Brian Hoyer to the rescue. The good news is that Batch was 3-1 in 2010 with Roethlisberger out of the lineup.

Palmer back in Cincy

With the NFL's 31st-ranked running game and the Raiders having given up an NFL high 32.2 points per game, Oakland is relying on Palmer more than it ever intended. He has passed for 303.5 yards per game and is on pace to eclipse Rich Gannon's single-season franchise record of 4,689 yards in 2002.

How will the Ravens match up against a big receiving corps?

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith loves creating instant mismatches by acquiring big wide receivers.

Malcom Floyd is 6-foot-5, 225 pounds. Danario Alexander is 6-5, 217. Robert Meachem is 6-2, 215. And Seyi Ajirotutu is 6-3, 215.

Plus, tight end Antonio Gates is athletic and large at 6-4, 255 pounds.

The Ravens will need to be physical and time their leaps well when contesting jump balls in order to slow down an explosive offense.

"Every one of their guys is a threat," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "I can start listing them, but we would probably run out of time. They have a lot of great players, not to mention their tight end, who is pretty good, too. Every one of their guys is a threat downfield. I think Philip [Rivers] has a lot of confidence in them, where he'll throw to spots and let those guys try to go make plays."
