Atlantic City casinos want sports betting - and they want it now.

The Casino Association of New Jersey which represents the Shore's 11 playpens is urging voters to support sports betting in casinos and race tracks. The CANJ is asking that a nonbinding referendum on the issue be on the ballot in November.

"Sports betting will allow Atlantic City to better compete, grow and reinvest in the region", says association president Bob Griffin. Passage of the referendum would be an important step, says Griffin. Congress outlawed sports betting in 1992 for 46 states. Only Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana were exempt because they had previously allowed wagering.

If passed, the referendum would ask the state legislature to amend the state constitution. At that point, either the courts would overturn the ban or congress would have to repeal it.

Betting on New Jersey college sports teams would be barred. Professional sports oppose betting of any sort because they believe it could promote cheating.

That would be great if Atlantic City opened up sports betting. Just hope its not like delaware. Here you can bet only on football and you cannot make straight bets. In fact, I think you can only bet two team parlays.
