American League Game Capsules (Wednesday, September 14th)

Final Score: Toronto 5, Boston 4

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Adam Loewen's two-run, go-ahead single came in a three-run eighth inning, as Toronto nipped Boston, 5-4, in the final portion of a two-game set from Fenway Park. J.P. Arencibia, Kelly Johnson and Edwin Encarnacion knocked in a run apiece for the Blue Jays, who recovered from an 18-6 loss in Tuesday's series opener and picked up their fifth win in seven games. Ricky Romero (15-10) allowed six hits and four runs -- three earned -- over eight innings for the win. Frank Francisco tossed a scoreless ninth for his 15th save. Adrian Gonzalez homered and Jason Varitek added an RBI for the Red Sox, who have dropped 10 of their last 13. Boston, which still sits atop the wild card standings, hosts playoff-hopeful Tampa Bay for four games starting Thursday. The Red Sox lead the Rays by four games for the wild card. Tampa Bay lost at Baltimore Wednesday night.

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Carlos Guillen singled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to lead the Tigers to a three-game sweep over the White Sox with a 6-5 victory. Ryan Raburn and Alex Avila each hit pinch-hit home runs in the top of the ninth to force the game into extra innings. Phil Coke (3-9) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the win and Jose Valverde struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th to earn his 44th save of the year. The Tigers have won 12 straight games and lowered their magic number to clinch their first division title since 1987 to two. Sergio Santos (4-5) was charged with the tying run in the ninth and then gave up the deciding run in the 10th to take the loss. Alexei Ramirez had two hits, two RBI and a run scored in Chicago's fourth consecutive defeat.

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Jered Weaver tossed seven innings of one-run ball, and Mark Trumbo hit a two-run home run to give the Angels a 4-1 victory over the Athletics in the rubber match of a three-game set. Weaver (17-7) allowed six hits and a walk to record his career-high 17th win of the year. Bobby Abreu had two hits and an RBI for the Angels, who remained three games behind the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West. Scott Downs threw a scoreless eighth and Jordan Walden closed out the game in the ninth to earn his 31st save of the year. Rich Harden (4-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk through 5 1/3 innings for the loss. Josh Willingham homered for the A's, losers in six of their last nine games.

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Mike Moustakas went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to help Kansas City sweep a two-game set against Minnesota with a 7-3 win. Salvador Perez went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Johnny Giavotella drove in two runs for the Royals, who tied their season high with their fourth straight win. Luke Hochevar (11-11) went six innings in the win, giving up two runs on five hits. Michael Cuddyer had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Twins, who have lost five straight and 10 of 11. Liam Hendriks (0-2) was tagged for five runs on eight hits over five innings in his second career start.

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Chris Davis hit a three-run home run to help the Baltimore Orioles take a 6-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in the rubber match of a three-game series. Matt Wieters homered for the third straight game, hitting a two-run shot in the eighth inning, while Vladimir Guerrero added three hits and two runs scored for the Orioles, who won the last two games of the series after dropping their previous three overall. Jeremy Guthrie (8-17) won his second straight start after giving up just two runs on three hits and three walks in seven innings. He also matched a career high with 10 strikeouts. Matt Joyce drove in both runs for the Rays, who had won five straight prior to dropping the past two games. Wade Davis (10-9) had a two-start winning streak snapped, as he gave up four runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. Tampa Bay remains four games back of the Red Sox, who lost to Toronto earlier Wednesday, for the AL wild card lead. The Rays start a four- game series in Boston on Thursday.

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Josh Hamilton's grand slam capped an eight- run fourth inning, and the Rangers blasted the Cleveland Indians, 9-1, to maintain their three-game lead in the AL West. Mike Napoli smacked a two-run homer and Ian Kinsler added a solo shot, as the Rangers won their third straight and climbed 21 games above .500 (85-64) for the first time since 1999. Texas maintained its division cushion on the Angels, who won at Oakland earlier Wednesday. Derek Holland (14-5) threw seven strong innings to win for the eighth time in his last nine decisions. The southpaw, who allowed six hits, including a fifth-inning homer to Lonnie Chisenhall, hasn't lost at home since July 2 against Florida. David Huff (2-5) surrendered eight hits and eight runs -- three earned -- over four innings to drop his third consecutive start. The Indians have scored one run in each of those appearances.

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Luis Rodriguez's homer in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted the Mariners to a 2-1 victory over the Yankees and prevented New York from completing a three-game sweep. Rodriguez led off the inning and took two balls and a strike from Cory Wade (5-1). The fourth pitch of the at-bat was an offspeed pitch over the plate, and Rodriguez hammered it deep over the right field wall to end the game. Rodriguez finished 3-for-5 with two doubles for Seattle, which snapped a four-game slide. Nick Swisher homered for the Yankees, who remained four games ahead of Boston for the AL East lead. The Red Sox lost to Toronto earlier Wednesday.
