American League Game Capsules (Monday, September 12th)

Final Score: Tampa Bay 5, Baltimore 2

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Ben Zobrist finished 3-for-5 and drove in three runs as Tampa Bay continued its playoff push with a 5-2 victory over Baltimore in the opener of a three-game series from Camden Yards. Sean Rodriguez and Johnny Damon added an RBI each for the Rays, who have won five straight and eight of nine to reduce their deficit to idle Boston in the AL wild-card race to three games. Jeff Niemann (10-7) worked 7 2/3 innings for the win, scattering six hits and two runs while fanning five and walking two. Matt Wieters homered for the Orioles, who have lost three in a row and seven of 10. Zach Britton (9-10) was tagged for five hits and four runs with four walks over five full frames in defeat.

Final Score: Detroit 14, Chicago 4

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - More than a week after the Tigers started their winning streak with a sweep of the White Sox, they haven't slowed down. Detroit got four hits and three RBI from Ryan Raburn in a 14-4 rout of Chicago, extending its winning streak to 10 games and reducing its magic number for clinching the AL Central to five. The Tigers pounded out 21 hits -- getting three from Delmon Young and Brandon Inge -- to notch their first 10-game winning streak since 1968, when the club won 11 in a row. Detroit began its current streak with a three-game sweep of the Sox from September 2-4, which ended with an 18-2 clobbering during which it set season highs in runs and hits. Eight days later, not much has changed. All the run support made for an easy victory for Rick Porcello (14-8), who allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings. White Sox starter John Danks (6-12) allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- in five innings to take the loss. Chicago is 11 1/2 games behind Detroit, tied with Cleveland for second-place in the division.

Final Score: Oakland 6, LA Angels of Anaheim 3

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Josh Willingham hit a three-run home run and finished with four RBI to help the Oakland Athletics take a 6-3 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim in the opener of a three-game set. Kurt Suzuki had three hits and Cliff Pennington added two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Athletics, who had lost four of six coming into the game. Gio Gonzalez (13-12) gave up two runs on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts over 6 2/3 frames to get the win. Vernon Wells hit a solo homer and had two RBI while Erick Aybar also hit a solo home run for the Angels, who have dropped their past two games. Joel Pineiro (6-7) went three-plus innings and was charged with four runs on five hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. The loss moves the Angels to three games back of Texas for first place in the AL West.

Final Score: New York 9, Seattle 3

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Mark Teixeira and Chris Dickerson homered off Felix Hernandez in the fourth inning, and Phil Hughes pitched six strong frames, as the New York Yankees turned back the Mariners, 9-3, at Safeco Field. Robinson Cano stroked a three-run double, as the Yankees widened their lead to four games over Boston in the AL East. The Yankees, who snapped a four-game skid on Sunday in Anaheim, compiled 14 hits, three from Cano. Hughes (5-5) ended a three-game winless stretch by limiting Seattle to five hits and a run. Hernandez (13-12), who had won his previous three starts, was charged with nine hits and six runs over six innings. He entered the night with a five-game winning streak vs. the Yankees, the longest ever by a Mariners pitcher. Miguel Olivo clubbed a two-run homer in the opener of this three-game series, but the Mariners fell to 3-9 this month.
