Saturday’s betting tips: Barnes iffy for UNC

Who’s hot

NBA: The under is 11-2 in Sacramento’s last 13 overall.

NBA: Denver is 23-6 against the spread in its last 29 road games.

NCAAB: Syracuse is 19-7 against the spread in its last 26 road games.

NCAAB: The under is 9-0 in Notre Dame’s last nine home games.

NHL: New Jersey has won seven of its last 10 road games.

NHL: San Jose has won 10 of its last 12 meetings with Phoenix.

Who’s not

NBA: Golden State is 2-5 against the spread in its last seven overall.

NBA: Utah has dropped four of its last five against the spread vs. the Lakers.

NCAAB: North Carolina is 1-5 against the spread in its last six meetings with Maryland.

NCAAB: Virginia is 2-9 against the spread in its last 11 meetings with Florida State.

NHL: The over is 4-13-4 in Colorado’s last 21 overall.

NHL: Florida is 1-8 in its last nine road games.

Key stat

8 – The Iowa Hawkeyes are the only team in the country with eight players who have attempted at least 125 field goals. They have five players putting up more than eight points per game, helping the club average 74 points per contest. Iowa is set as a 7-point home favorite against Penn State Saturday.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Harrison Barnes, North Carolina Tar Heels – Barnes is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game against Maryland with a sprained left ankle. The forward hurt his ankle in Tuesday’s win at Wake Forest. He was able to return to the game, but was on crutches Wednesday. X-rays came back negative but he didn’t practice Thursday.

Game of the day

Kansas Jayhawks at Missouri Tigers (-2.5, 147.5)

Notable quotable

"I got a text from Gretzky, which is unbelievable. He’s the greatest player of all time and to get a text from him … it's just so classy for him to do. And actually Paul Coffey called me this morning. For them to take the time out to call me after a game like last night … it's just so special and it shows a lot about the kind of people they are." – Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Gagner after scoring eight points against the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday night, tying Gretzky and Coffey for the single-game franchise record. The Oilers take on the Detroit Red Wings Saturday.

Note and tips

Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun will take an indefinite medical leave of absence to deal with spinal stenosis, which causes pain and limits mobility. Friday's announcement marks the third time that the Hall of Fame coach has left the Huskies for medical reasons. Associate head coach George Blaney will guide the team in Saturday's game versus Big East foe Seton Hall and Monday's tilt against Louisville. Calhoun has guided the Huskies to three national championships.

Free agent forward Kenyon Martin has agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract to play with the Los Angeles Clippers, according to Yahoo! Sports on Friday. Martin signed a contract with the Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association earlier this season, which could delay his debut with the Clippers until after Feb. 16. The 34-year-old averaged 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in 48 games for the Denver Nuggets last season.

Syracuse men's basketball center Fab Melo was reinstated from suspension and will be available for Saturday's game against St. John's. Orange coach Jim Boehim said he was uncertain whether Melo will start or come off the bench. He had been suspended due to an academic issue. The 7-foot Melo started the first 20 games, averaging 7.2 points and 5.7 rebounds to go with a team-high 60 blocked shots. Syracuse (22-1, 9-1) suffered its first loss of the season without Melo, losing at Notre Dame on Jan. 21.

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard will be sidelined at least two games with a broken finger on his right hand, the team announced on Friday. Howard suffered the injury during the third period of Thursday's 4-3 shootout victory over the Vancouver Canucks. The All-Star netminder will miss the team's next two games of the road trip before being re-evaluated on Tuesday. The 27-year-old Howard has posted a 32-11-1 mark with five shutouts and a 2.03 goals-against average this season. Detroit recalled goaltender Joey MacDonald from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. Ty Conklin will likely receive the start versus the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Bonuses received by the top six picks in LY's baseball draft:

6) Anthony Rendon, 3B, Nationals-- $6,000,000

5) Bubba Starling, OF, Royals-- $7,500,000

4) Dylan Bundy, P, Orioles-- $4,000,000

3) Trevor Bauer, P, Arizona-- $3,400,000

2) Danny Hultzen, P, Mariners-- $6,350,000

1) Gerrit Cole, P, Pirates-- $8,000,000

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

13) To me, an avid A’s fan, one of the most interesting aspects of Moneyball is how little Billy Beane watches the actual games, saying it helps him avoid making emotional decisions; that’s something for me to think about today, the day after I watched the Washington Huskies beat UCLA 71-69 in game I picked on this website (unfortunately, I had Washington -3.5).

12) My reason for bringing this up is that I got really annoyed during the game with Washington’s casual disrespect for the ball; very few pass fakes, lazy one-hand passes, even one behind-the-back bounce pass in the normal course of running the offense, which was easily picked off by the defense. (In all my years watching basketball, I had never seen a behind-the-back bounce pass except in transition, and there were very few of those).

Washington is a very talented team, but they play fast and loose-- Coach Romar benched his point guard for the last 8:00 of the game, and the team played better without him, a lot better.

11) Lesson learned is that while there is information to be gained by watching, you have to detach yourself from the result to properly analyze whats going on. Hopefully I learned that lesson last night. Its important for me to watch the games, but only to gain knowledge.

10) UCLA is now 0-5 in Pac-12 games played outside LA; their only road win was at USC.

9) Knicks have been on ESPN/TNT three times in last eight nights; don’t the TV programmers know the Knicks aren’t good?

8) ESPN’s Hubie Brown ripped NBA players who campaign to be traded in the media, saying significant fines would put an end to such nonsense. If you’re not happy where you are, it reduces your chances of being happy in your next stop, especially when you’re getting paid millions to be there.

7) Speaking of overpaid, Simon Cowell is rumored to be offering Beyonce Knowles $100M to be a judge on X Factor; exactly where does that money come from?

Would her presence on the show recoup the production company their $100M back? I’m not saying it wouldn’t, I’m just wondering.

6) For 30 minutes Thursday, Murray State looked like a team playing with a big load on their shoulders, the load of being a mid-major that’s the last unbeaten team left in country; hopefully they’ll learn to deal with it.

5) Excellent coaching job being done by NC-Greensboro interim coach Wes Miller, who has the Spartans at 9-14 after being 1-11 at one point. Greensboro actually leads their half of the Southern Conference.

4) Bill Belichick’s non-Brady NFL coaching record: 52-62.

I’m just sayin’…….

3) Looking ahead to when I retire from my day job in three years, I’m planning on going to A’s spring training for a week or so; I’ve never been to spring training. Hopefully they’ll get the go-ahead for that stadium in San Jose this summer, which would make 2016 the year they resume trying to win, so spring training would be a little more fun than usual.

2) I’m wondering why college basketball doesn’t have a Signing Day like college football does, then the next second I realize how thankful I am that they don’t; players are full enough of themselves as they are, and yes, I know I sound old when I say that.

1) I’m totally sick of hearing about Peyton Manning’s neck, but it should be pointed out that older brother Cooper’s football career as a WR at Ole Miss also ended because of a neck injury.

What to watch: College basketball betting TV guide

Syracuse Orange at St. John’s Red Storm, 12 p.m., ESPN (+12.6, 136)

Fab Melo is back – just maybe not in the starting lineup. The center who missed the past three games due to academic reasons has been cleared to play, but coach Jim Boeheim remained undecided if the sophomore would be immediately reinserted into the first unit. Melo averaged 7.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game with a team-high 60 blocks before his suspension.

“He’s got to get back to work and get back into the flow of the game,’’ Boeheim told the Syracuse Post-Standard. “We’ll have to wait and see. We’ll see how he reacts to being out.’’

Marquette Golden Eagles at Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 1 p.m., CBS (1, 129)

Don’t expect a lot of points for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame has won three league games where it has shot worse than 37 percent from the floor – against Louisville (31.7), at Seton Hall (35.1) and against UConn (36.2). But the team has countered its poor offensive output by playing at a snail’s pace and ratcheting up the defense.

Not only have the Fighting Irish given up an average of just 45 points the past two games, but the team has held its past three opponents to a combined four fast-break points.

“We understand each other, how to rotate,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey told reporters. “And we're keeping people for the most part to one-and-done.”

Ohio State Buckeyes at Wisconsin Badgers, 2 p.m., ESPN (2, 115.5)

Ben Brust is finally healthy. The Wisconsin guard and dynamic bench scorer has battled an illness that had him drop six pounds and forced him to play a season-low 11 minutes in a mid-week win at Penn State. Brust, who averages 9.3 points per game, missed all four of his field goals and committed a turnover in the victory over the Nittany Lions.

“I tried to put all my best energy out there,” Brust told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “But shots weren’t falling. Maybe fatigue, maybe not. I feel 1,000 times better.”

North Carolina Tar Heels at Maryland Terrapins, 4 p.m., ESPN (13, 150.5)

Sophomore Terrell Stoglin is giving the Terrapins a chance to win every game. The ACC leading scorer averages 21.8 points per game and is coming off his third 30-point performance of the season as he dropped a career-high 33 in a 90-86 double-overtime loss at Miami this week. Stoglin made just six of a school-record 20 3-pointers but he was a perfect 9 of 9 from the free-throw line and committed a mere three turnovers.

“If we popped in a film from Day One until now, I think you'd just be shocked how much better the kid is," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon told the Baltimore Sun. "He doesn't totally know how to play a certain way for us to win. In his mind, he's got to shoot every time for us to win. He's trying to figure it out."

Air Force Falcons at Colorado State Rams, 5 p.m., CBS College Sports (-8, 125.5)

Pierce Hornung needs to shrug off his most recent performance. Hornung, who missed extended time earlier this season with a concussion, had a horrific 31 minutes in a blow-out loss at UNLV, finishing with four points and three turnovers before fouling out. Hornung is the team’s top reserve and averaging 7.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

"We still have to prove it, but I think a lot of people have underestimated us,” Colorado State coach Tim Miles told the Denver Post. “We're not out of the woods, but I think we could show some people moxie I don't think they thought we had."

Indiana Hoosiers at Purdue Boilermakers, 7 p.m., Big Ten Network (-3.5, 143)

Terone Johnson made the most of a shot at the starting lineup at Northwestern. The sophomore guard delivered with the first unit in a mid-week win over the Wildcats, posting a team-high 14 points to go with three assists, two rebounds, two blocks and two steals. But is it enough to keep him with the starting five? Coach Matt Painter wouldn’t tip his hand.

"I thought he responded well to starting,” Painter told the West Lafayette Journal and Courier. “Sometimes, guys start, and it doesn't help them. Today, it looked like it did help him starting and being comfortable out there."

Kansas Jayhawks at Missouri Tigers, 9 p.m., ESPN (-3, 147.5)

Marcus Denmon is in the biggest slump of his career. The Missouri guard shot 50 percent from the floor and nearly 45 percent from 3-point range last season but has been much colder this season and downright frigid his past eight games. Over that span he is shooting a mere 31 percent with his woes coming to a head in a win over Texas earlier this week where he made just three of his 12 shots while missing all three of his 3-point attempts en route to a season-low six points.

“A guy like him, he knows he’s not shooting the ball well, so what do I need to talk to him about it for?” Missouri Coach Frank Haith told The Columbia Tribune. “All I need to do is continue to talk to him about taking good shots.”

College funds: Saturday's best NCAAB bets

Kansas Jayhawks at Missouri Tigers (-3, 147.5)

The stakes are always high when border rivals Missouri and Kansas get together, but the intensity might be at an all-time crescendo when the No. 4 Tigers host the No. 8 Jayhawks at Mizzou Arena.

Not only are the teams squaring off for the 15th time when both are ranked in the top 10, but both are also in contention for the Big 12 title, and perhaps a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. To add to the atmosphere, ESPN’s College Gameday has selected Mizzou Arena as the site for its broadcast for the first time in school history.

This also could be the last season the archrivals meet for the foreseeable future, with Missouri headed to the Southeastern Conference next season.

The senior-laden Tigers are led by guard Marcus Denmon, whose 17.2 points per game ranks fourth in the Big 12, and forward Ricardo Ratliffe, who leads the nation in field goal percentage (75.1) and scored 14.7 points per game.

That experience could be the difference.

Pick: Tigers

Iowa State Cyclones at Oklahoma Sooners (-1.5, 139.5)

There shouldn't be any shortage of offense when these two teams hook up.

Something will have to give as Iowa State and host Oklahoma enter as two of the Big 12’s worst defensive teams. The Cyclones are eighth in scoring defense (66.6 points) and ninth in field goal percentage defense (43 percent), while the Sooners are last in points allowed (68.1) and eighth in field goal percentage defense (42 percent).

The Cyclones have climbed to fourth in the Big 12 in field goal percentage (45 percent), thanks in large part to a stretch of four wins in five games. In those five contests, Iowa State is shooting 45 percent (120 of 266), including 51 percent in the recent victory over Kansas State.

Royce White is among the Big 12 leaders in a number of categories, including rebounding (second, averaging 9.5) and field goal percentage (fourth, 54 percent). In the last five games, the redshirt sophomore is averaging 9.2 rebounds and shooting 55 percent, while averaging 15.8 points, nearly two points better than his season scoring average.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma has three players averaging better than 12 points per game. That depth and home court should get the Sooners through this test.

Pick: Sooners
