The Outback Bowl between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the LSU Tigers is going to be one of the more talked about January 1st bowl games of the year, in large part due to the fact that the Tigers are going to be playing with a freshman quarterback here. The Hawkeyes are one of the few teams in college football who have shown a stronger defense in terms of points per game than the Tigers have, as the Hawkeyes allow just 18.8 points per game, and the Tigers allow only 22.7 points per game. The same similar numbers can't be said for the offensive side of things between these two teams.

The Tigers average almost a full ten points more than the Hawkeyes do. Iowa has put up an average of 27.3 points per game, and the Tigers have put up an average of 37 points per game. The Hawkeyes finished up this year with an 8-4 record, and the Tigers finished up at 9-3 on the year. The real strength for the Tigers though was playing at home, as they were 2-3 on the road, and interestingly the Hawkeyes were just 4-3 in front of their home fans.

LSU also has averaged quite a few more yards per game than the Iowa has, as LSU averages 465.9 yards per game, which is 27th best in the nation, and Iowa averages 389 yards per game, which is 81st best in the nation. The passing game though may end up being a big difference, if the true freshman for LSU can step up and play a big game.

Passing Yards Per Game

LSU has simply been much better at airing it out in comparison to the Hawkeyes. Iowa averages just 200.4 yards per game through the air, while the Tigers have managed 265.1 yards per game, which is 34th best in the nation. Obviously these numbers could look completely different with a freshman quarterback running the show for the LSU Tigers, but only time will tell.

Currently the sports betting line on this one is at -7.5 for the LSU Tigers, which is to be expected. The decision on this game would probably be a bit tougher for me if the Tigers had their quarterback, but I think that Iowa is a talented team who is capable of keeping this game within a touchdown. Probably going to sit this one out since I think LSU wins the game but not sure if they cover the number. Will be playing LSU on teasers and moneyline parlays at worse case.
