Report: Chris Johnson, Titans agree to $53.5 million deal

by Robert Klemko-USA Today
Chris Johnson wanted to be paid like a playmaker.

On Thrusday, 35 days into his holdout, he got his wish (according to The Tennessean).

The Titans and their all pro RB have agreed to a four-year, $53.5 million contract worth $30 million guaranteed, reports Jim Wyatt.

Johnson and his agent, Joel Segal, met with Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt and Vice President of Football Operations Vin Marino last week in Nashville, but after that meeting Johnson admitted the two sides didn't see "eye to eye."

On Wednesday, however, the two sides finally had a breakthrough in negotiations.

Johnson was scheduled to make $1.065 million in 2011. With an average salary of $13.5 million, his contract not only makes him the NFL's highest paid running back, it also puts him in a category among the game's "elite" players.

The highest paid running backs in the league make roughly $9.5 million to $10.5 million per year annually over the first three years of the deal. Minnesota's Adrian Peterson is scheduled to make $10.7 million in the final year of his contract. Last month, the Panthers reached a deal with running back DeAngelo Williams that gave him $21 million in guaranteed money.

Johnson has led the NFL in total rushing yards over the past three seasons combined (4,598).

I was watching Mike and Mike this morning and that is all they talked about. Glad to see those two come to an agreement. He deserves the money for what he has done in recent years. I personally thought Tennessee since they might suck this year would try to trade him. I like Chris Johnson and wish hiim well.
