TAMPA BAY over Baltimore by 10
Bucs host the defending Super Bowl champs with plenty of positive
point spread fodder in play here today. For openers, Tampa has
made a living in preseason lid-lifters the past ten years, going 8-2
SU and 8-1-1 ATS – including a jaw-dropping 8-0 SU and 7-0-1 ATS
as a favorite or dog of 3 or less points. Enter the high-flying Ravens,
fresh off a stirring 34-31 upset-win over the 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII
this past February. That sets the tone for today’s fray as defending
Super Bowl champs are a dismal 1-9 SU and 2-7-1 ATS in road openers
when facing non-conference foes during the preseason. With Tampa
Bay anxious to make amends for a 1-5 finish to last year’s 7-9 effort
under then-rookie head coach Greg Schiano – and the Black Birds
more concerned about finding replacements for a squad that lost
four defensive starters during the off-season.

NEW ORLEANS over Kansas City by 16
Opening week matchup finds two head coaches anxious to make
their long-awaited debuts, with Sean Payton finally back on the
Saints’ sidelines and Andy Reid donning a Kansas City Chiefs
headdress for the first time ever. The primary edge in this game,
though, is the fact than one coach (Payton) makes it a practice to
show well in preseason openers while the other (Reid) does not.
That’s confirmed by New Orleans’ 4-2 SUATS mark in exhibition
openers under Payton, including 2-0 SUATS at home. In addition,
the Saints have won and covered three straight preseason
home openers behind Payton, with every win by a double-digit
margin. On the flip side, Reid’s blasé approach to the preseason
is especially deep-rooted in openers away from home, where his
troops are 1-7 SU and 1-6-1 ATS in his NFL career. A 3-point
loss as 9-point home favorites over the Chiefs here in Week
Three of the 2012 regular season provides added incentive.
