Kentucky Derby 2015 Before I go into the write up let me say these are my opinions on the horses. If you have your own theory on horses, follow them. Nothing worse than having your own ways and theories and then at the last minute you follow someone else and your theory wins. Just gut wrenching. Hopefully I can give you some input on the horses and then you can make your choice from there. Not be redundant, but I have to start out by saying it again…Kentucky Derby is CRAP SHOOT, but it is fun to watch and bet because of all the hype. You have 20 horses running in a race that are basically juvenile horses. These are only 3 year olds and with every race they run, they gain experience and strength as they are still growing. Two years ago I really liked Will Take Charge. He was a huge horse, but it took 3 more races after the Derby for him to grow into his massive frame, he went on to become one of the top horses in the country. Last year Wicked Strong took a few races to truly develop. You just don't know which horses are peaking and which have already peaked. We have front runners who have never had dirt in their faces when racing, they have had the perfect trip (s).. Many horses do not like dirt in their face at all and tend to get worked up and skittish when it happens. I prefer closers and those who rate close to the top in past races. Again, experience counts in previous races. None the less, here we go in no particular order……………. I will place my wagers for the Kentucky Derby on this thread on Thursday, after the post positions are drawn, so check back then for wages if you like. INTERNATIONAL STAR – Leading points getter for the Derby. Horse has 9 starts with 5 wins, 2 places and has a closing style. The buyer figures are rising slowly, but his last three races were pretty much against the same horses and none of them were of much quality. When up against EL KABIER, who is in this race and on the same Churchill track, he got smoked. DORTMUND – If you had to put a picture of a thoroughbred horse in the dictionary, this horse would be it!! This horse is spectacular, 18 hands tall (Will Take Charge was 17.5) This horse is just huge!!! So big he did not sell at the yearling sales, seen as too heavy. Sold for $140k. Has 6 races and won all 6 including a win over the surface at Churchill back in November. His buyers have gone up steadily with his last buyer speed figure a whopping 106 which is second best in the field. He has run a consistent mile in 1:35, with one race at 1:34 and he kept going. This horse is a major player and it is no secret. He can be a front running horse, which he has been, but can also be a stalking type of horse. Interesting to see what trainer Bob Baffert and the jockey have planned. MAJOR CONSIDERATION! CARP DIEM – Lots of hype in this horse. Cost $1.6 million at yearling sales.Trained by Todd Pletcher. Horse has 5 races with 4 wins and place. Beaten several horses in this race and his buyers are steady, with the last one being a 102, previous 2 were 96 and 93. He has a front running style and will have to rate with others in here to go the 1 ¼ mile distance. His mile times have been very decent with a 1:35, 1:36 and 1:37. AMERICAN PHAROAH - 5 races under his belt with 4 wins. Horse was scratched at the Breeders Cup Juvenile at the last moment. This horse has been talked about for quite some time, but I think being out of racing since last September has this horse a bit under the radar. What I mean by that is; he last raced in September of 2014, was scratched in November with an injury, then races again in March after a 6 month layoff. If he raced in the BC Juvenile and had won, this horse would be the talk of horse racing. Yes, he is the favorite, but getting 2-1 on him is a gift, he should be 4/5 or 3/5. Came back after a 6 month layoff and won the Rebel Stakes in the slop. There was no great competition in this race, but that was just first time out warm up and he walked through it winning by 7 lengths on a hand ride with a 99 buyer. Next time out he wins by 8 in the Arkansas Derby against several horses in this race. Opening fractions of .22 and .45 with a mile in 1:35. Hits a 102 buyer off an untouched race. Watch it on You-Tube, Espinoza never even sat on the horse, stood up the entire time and just cruised to finish line. Baffert said way back in November, this is the best horse he has ever been a part of, and Baffert is the trainer of DORTMUND as well. Morning clocker at Churchill Downs who has been clocking horses for 35 years said this is the best horse he has seen in his life time. True potential has yet to be seen. MAJOR CONTENDER! WINNER! FROSTED – very pretty grey horse. Has 7 races under the belt with 2 wins, 4 places. Is a closing style of runner, which may come in handy if a speed duel breaks out. Winner of the Wood Memorial to beat several horse that are in this race. Previous buyers were in the high 90’s and he runs a 107 buyer in the race. Did the horse finally wake up and run or did he run the race of his life? Is he going to bounce after the last race? Mile speed figures are 1:37 and 1:38. Interesting horse. MUBDAAHIJ – foreign horse that races in Dubaii. I do not have a good read on this based on fractions. They run in meters overseas and countdown backwards in the races. Horse has 7 races under his belt with 4 wins and second. The other two races were his first two starts and they were on turf. Once moved to the dirt this horse has taken off. The only horse in the field to run more than a 1 1/8 including a 1 3/8 mile race., winning both and winning going away with ease. Watch the UAE Derby on You-Tube and see this horse take off in the stretch. Also watch the Al Bastakiya Stakes. The end results are impressive. I said I cant read the overseas charts, but I read where his last fractions were a tad bit better then DORTMUNDS in the last race. That is impressive. Here is the thing; horses are creatures of habit, this horse has changed time zones and sleeping habits, has changed training schedules. His stable mate that helps calm a horse down was not allowed to travel with him and the food he eats was not allowed in the country (I have no idea why). He is also not running on Lasix. He will be a drug free horse. The only horse to run with no Lasix and win was GRINDSTONE, but there was a second with LION HEART and a 4th place finish with DON’T GET MAD. So, we have a horse with skills, but has had to change his diet, sleeping habits and training schedule on the biggest race in the world. Horse has a great stalking style with obvious closing kick. I cannot throw him out of exotics. MATERIALITY – lightly raced horse with only 3 races, but he won all 3 with some of wins over horses in this race. Buyers are increasing steadily from 96 – 100 – 105. Very impressive for such a young horse. Todd Pletcher is the trainer of this one. Has the front running, stalker style to run in the race. His mile fractions are 1:38, 1:39 . Here is the deal, no horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby who has not run as two year old. This horse had its first race as a 3 year old on January 15th of this year. Hard to go against history. This is a horse to look at down the road, especially come summer. Truly hard to know what to do here. EL KABIER - Good looking horse with 9 races under his belt, going 3 wins, 1 place, 1 show. Has a win over the track in the Kentucky Juvenile with a wire to wire effort. Buyers are decent, with a couple in the 100, 102 range. John Terranova is the trainer. There has been much hype about this horse, but I see may inconcistencies in the running and was no match for Frosted when they went up against each other. May be over matched in here. UPSTART - Another popular horse in the industry with 7 races under his belt and has never been worse than 3rd, including 4 wins. He was disqualified after winning the Fountain of Youth at Gulf Stream Park, but he won the race and ran a very good one at that. Four of his races ended up with buyers of 100 + including a 105 and 106. There is nothing really bad about this horse. Has consistent 1 mile times of 1:38 with a stalking, front end running style. Richard Viollette Jr. is the trainer who is pretty darn good. This horse could be a player in the mix. FAR RIGHT – One of the most experienced horses in the field with 9 races under his belt and never being worse than 3rd. He as 3 races on the course finishing in the money all three times with one win was his maiden race. His buyers are not that strong, ranging in the mid to upper 90’s, but he is not a speed horse, this horse is one of only a hand full of closers, and this horse is a deep closer. He will come running like the wind late. He came in second to American Pharoah in his last race. Was no match for AP, but the closing was impressive none the less. Trainer is Ron Moquett who is quietly working his way up the ranks. He is young, but bright. I do not see this horse winning, but I can see him closing and passing tired horses to get up in exotics. May get 50 -1 or more on him too. (NOTE: if it rains on race day, I really like this horse to come in money) ITSAKNOCKOUT – Another Pletcher horse and another lightly raced horse with only 4 races, going 3 wins and a 4th. Came in 2nd in Fountain of Youth, but placed 1st with a DQ. Has a stalking running style First race was in December of 2014. He finished behind UPSTART twice and lost to few others that are in this race as well. Buyers are up and down, 82, 91, 102, 83. It would be nice to figure out what this horse wants to be and do, but this is not the race to try and figure it out. I think he is over matched in this race. FIRING LINE - Horse has 5 races under his belt with 2 wins and 3 places. If you like DORTMUND, you have to like this horse. He has gone nose to nose with DORTMUND twice and lost them both by a less than a head. These two horses battled it out nose to nose to the wire. If this horse wins them both he is second choice favorite. Simon Callaghan the trainer chose not to run up against DORTMUND in the San Felepi or Santa Anita Derbies and placed this horse in the Sun Land Derby, the only thing he did was break the track record, 1:47 for a mile and eigth race. Ran ¾ mile in 1:09. Only horse in field to have that number. He ran the mile in 1:34. Granted there were no horses in that race that are in this race, but this horse is way way over looked in my eyes. Could easily be 4 wins, 1 place record. Has a front running style and speed to burn, can he last 1 ¼ distance. I see him in exotics and if you like DORTMUND you have to like this horse as well. DANZIG MOON - horse has 5 races with 1 win, 2 places and 2 fourths. Took 3 tries to break his maiden and is now all of sudden going up against best horses in county/world. Mark Casse is the trainer who is having a very good Santa Anita meet this Spring. Only horse in the field to start 5 races on 5 different tracks. Buyer figures are low, but did put up a 99 last race out. I don’t see this horse being a major factor. WAR STORY - Tom Amoss trained horse. Has 5 races under his belt with 2 wins, 2 places, 3rd. Broke his maiden on Churchill Track. Has only run at Fair Grounds . Has a buyer of 96 with a closing running style. Can’t count speed figures on a closer though. Mile was run in 1:37, but no major wins on the card for him and he has a consistent history of bad breaks. You get a bad start here with 20 horses you are in trouble and if he draws and inside post forget it. The only thing I can say is this; closed like a freight train to brake his maiden on this track. Had a closing kick to make 3rd in the Louisiana Derby. Can’t knock a horse that closes like this when horses are tiring at the end of mile and quarter. Does he win…heck no. Can he get exotics at 3rd and 4th for a price. HECK YES!!. For the odds he will be I will throw him in the deep exotics; triple and super. \ TENCENDUR – Home track horse at Aqueduct with 5 races, and he has placed 1 though 5 in each of them. Came in second to FROSTED in the Wood Memorial with an impressive 105 buyer, but previous to that he ran a 90. That is 15 point jump. The track had to be fast that day because FROSTED jumped 12 buyer points on that same race. Interesting little tid bit there. George Weaver is the trainer He was beaten handily bi EL KABIER the 2 times he faced him. Looking else wear STANFORD – yet another Pletcher entry with 5 races. 2 wins, 2 places and 5th. Has a front running style with a 99 buyer. Race history in not very competitive with a maiden special, optional claiming and 80k overnight stakes. Maybe he is a late bloomer and the last race woke him up, but he wont wake up against these. Out classed. OCHO OCHO OCHO - Very promising horse early on in his career. 5 races with 3 wins in row with buyers of 101 and 104, then something happened. Horse ran 8th and 3rd with buyers of 83 and then a 96 while losing to Carpe Diem, but finishing 3rd. At 1 1/8 he had nothing left in the tank. How can he go 1 ¼? Good horse with promise in other races, not for me in this race . MR. Z – THE most experienced horse in the race with 12 races. 9 of them are in the money with only 1 win, and that was hid maiden race at Churchill Downs. Has a great resume for Stakes races; 3 grade 1, two grade 2 and 4 grade 3. He has been beaten by several horses in the race, but he always seems to give a race effort. He prefers a front running stalking stlye, but never wants the win. Trained by the always clever and great D. Wayne Lukas who somehow manages to show up in the big race. Buyers are ok for front runner/stalker but again, never wants that winners circle. Looking else wear. BOLO - not a bad horse. 5 races with 2 wins and 2 thirds, but came in 3rd to DORTMUND twice his last 2 races. Nothing to complain about there. Buyer figures are 100, 102 and 98 the past 3. I think this horse want to be a closer, more than a stalker, but I am not the trainer. Carla Gaines is the only female trainer in the race. He has been beaten by DORTMUND twice rather handily. I think this is turf horse as his first two races were wins on the turf, would not be surprised if he is pulled out of race before post time and entered in a turf race. KEEN ICE – Gets in the race with the scratch of MADEFROMLUCKY. Broke his maiden on this very track back in September and did so with a massive late kick. Has 7 races under him, but never finishing better than 3rd. Has lost to several of these horses in this race including twice to INTERNATIONAL STAR, was not even a factor in the races against him. Buyer figures in the past 3 have been in the 90’s, but he is a closer, buyer figures don’t really apply to his style. Will come closing once he gets a shot, but will be a long shot to win. Closing kick does not look as powerful as the other deep closers in here. With 20 horse field it will be tough trip.
