The Chip Kelly era will get underway in Philadelphia on Monday night after a 4-12 campaign in 2012 ended Andy Reid’s 14-year tenure as head coach. Kelly brings his fast-paced, up tempo style of play to the NFL that helped make Oregon a national power at the collegiate level. With players like Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson in the Eagles’ starting line-up the anticipation for a return to big play capability is running high.
The problem with Philadelphia for Monday night is that it comes into this matchup with a defense that is very susceptible to giving-up the big play. It finished last season ranked 15th overall in the NFL in total yards allowed, but it was 23rd against the run and 29th in points allowed. With a number of new faces on this side of the ball it could take the Eagles a few games to adapt to defensive coordinator Billy Davis’s newly installed 3-4 scheme.
The Redskins used the second overall pick of the 2012 draft to select quarterback Robert Griffin III and the move paid immediate dividends with a 10-6 record and a NFC East Division title. Griffin went down with a serious knee injury in a Wildcard Round loss to Seattle, but has been able to miraculously work his way back into the starting lineup for the team’s season opener. How much rust exists with the second-year phenon remains to be seen after sitting out the entire preseason, but this matchup presents the perfect opportunity to light up the scoreboard with some big plays of his own.
Washington also brings a rock-solid running game into the season opener behind another second-year vet, Alfred Morris. As a rookie, he gained the second-most rushing yards in the NFL with 1,613 on 335 carries and he found the end zone 13 times. Much like Philadelphia, the big question mark for the Redskins coming into this game is a defense that was ranked 28th in the NFL last season.
Free NFL Pick
This should be a great matchup between two NFC East rivals and while the edge goes to Washington especially playing this game at home with RG III behind center, the free NFL pick is on the OVER as both these teams will be able to put points on the board.
