NFL Betting Favorite: Patriots -4
The New England Patriots squeaked by the New York Jets earlier this year. That is a game that the Jets really feel they should have won. New York gets a second chance at the Patriots this weekend at home. New England is coming off a huge comeback win, while the Jets are coming off a disappointing home loss to Pittsburgh. Let’s examine this AFC East matchup.
Tom Brady threw an interception late in last week’s game against the Saints, and it looked like that would be the Patriots last chance. It turned out that the Saints weren’t able to get any first downs, and the Patriots got one final chance late. Brady took advantage of that second chance, and the Patriots moved to 5-1 on the year. New England was a double digit favorite over the Jets in their first meeting, but they were fortunate to be able to get out with a win. The Patriots should come into this game focused.
Brady’s numbers aren’t nearly as impressive this year, but that’s to be expected. Have you looked at the roster of wide receivers the Patriots have this year? Julian Edelman is the team’s top receiver, when in the past they have had elite pass catchers all over the field. Rob Gronkowski is still listed as questionable for this game. Whenever he comes back, he’ll be a big boost for this offense. The rushing attack has actually been more consistent than the passing attack. Stevan Ridley is turning into a quality back. The Patriots defense has given up a decent amount of yards, but they are fourth in points per game allowed at just 16.2 per contest.
The New York Jets sit at 3-3 so far this year, and they are a tough team to figure out. It seems like every time people start to count them out they play very well. On the other hand, when they come into a game with some positive expectations (like last weekend), they typically don’t play well at all. The Jets defense has been solid all year. They are fourth in the NFL in total defense. New York is second in the NFL when it comes to stopping the run. The secondary has been hit or miss, and they’ll need to come up big this weekend.
Geno Smith has had his ups and downs early on in his rookie season in the NFL. Smith has 7 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. After throwing three touchdown passes and zero interceptions against Atlanta, he threw no touchdowns and two picks in the team’s loss to Pittsburgh last weekend. Seven guys have at least 10 catches so far this year for the Jets. Overall, the Jets are averaging just 17.3 points per game so far this season. The offense will have to get better for this team to remain competitive.
Free Pick: Under 43.5
The Patriots defense is much better than it used to be, and these teams know each other very well. Look for this one to stay under the posted total.
