On Friday in NBA betting action east meets west as the Houston Rockets play host to the Indiana Pacers at 9:30 ET on ESPN inside the Toyota Center.
The Pacers took a surprising blowout loss to the Charlotte Bobcats 109-87 in their last game on Wednesday. Even with the loss, Indiana still sits atop the Eastern Conference standings by 1.5 games over the Miami Heat at 45-15 SU on the year. It was just one of those nights for the Pacers where they completely no showed in Charlotte. No starter scored higher than G George Hill who put up 17 points and three rebounds. The bench largely carried the team as F Evan Turner scored 22 points and dished out five assists in the loss. It was the first time since December 18th that this team suffered back-to-back losses. Ironically, Houston was the next opponent after those consecutive losses as it is again on Friday night in primetime. The Pacers blew the Rockets away 114-81 that night behind 24 points from F Paul George who also had nine boards and four assists in that game. Indiana is 33-27-1 ATS overall this season, but just 1-8-1 ATS in its L/10 games. To get a win in this game, the Pacers will need all hands on deck to defeat a tough Rockets team on their home floor.
The Rockets ran their winning streak to three games in a row with a 101-89 win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. It was C Dwight Howard’s coming out party in his old stomping grounds as he had 19 points and 14 rebounds in the win. Howard is having an outstanding year in Houston scoring 19.0 points and grabbing 12.5 boards per game. He is once again a candidate for NBA Defensive Player of the Year averaging 1.8 blocks per game. Running mate G James Harden also had a strong night in Orlando scoring 31 points and dishing out six assists. The Rockets offense puts up 106.3 points per game as the No. 3 ranked unit in the league. Winners in eight of their L/10 games, this team has covered six spreads over that stretch. At 42-19 SU, the Rockets trail the San Antonio Spurs by 3.5 games in the Western Conference standings for the No. 2 seed in the playoffs as well as in the Southwest Division standings. This will be a big test for Houston on Friday as it tries to defend its home floor against the top team in the Eastern Conference and gain some respect as one of the league’s elite teams.
The Pacers reeling right now and just are not playing their best basketball which is showing up on the scoreboard in the last two games. While on the flip side, the Rockets are playing a fast paced game that plays to the strengths of Harden and Howard. Houston is 16-13-2 ATS on its home floor this season and we think they are catching Indiana at the right time. We expect the Rockets to send the Pacers to a third straight loss for the first time all year in this game with a big win at home. Houston 106 – Indiana 99
