Chasing the World Cup . . .
Thursday offers up the second-last day of group action at the World Cup, with Slovakia vs. Italy, Paraguay vs. New Zealand, Denmark vs. Japan, and Cameroon vs. Netherlands. The Italians have just two ties to show for their first two matches, but they're -200 favorites against Slovakia (+600) with draw odds of +275. Paraguay, which leads Group F with four points, is favored at -250 over New Zealand (+650), with draw odds of +330. The Netherlands, the undefeated leaders of Group E, are -125 favorites over winless Cameroon (+330), with draw odds of +250, while Denmark is a slight +120 favorite over Japan (+220), with draw odds of +230. Denmark and Japan are tied at three points apiece in the group standings through their two matches.

Adam Wainwright (10-4, 2.23 ERA) will take the mound for the Cardinals on Thursday night as they close out their series in Toronto against the Blue Jays and Brandon Morrow (4-5, 4.97 ERA). Righthander Wainwright dominated the Athletics in his last trip to the mound, surrendering just a single unearned run on five hits over his eight innings of work. Righthander Morrow took a no-decision against the Giants in his last start, giving up two earned runs on five hits over his six innings pitched in that contest.
Also on the MLB slate for Thursday: San Francisco at Houston, San Diego at Tampa Bay, Cleveland at Philadelphia, Atlanta at the White Sox, Minnesota at Milwaukee, the Cubs at Seattle, Florida at Baltimore, Detroit at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Texas, Boston at Colorado, and the Dodgers at the Angels. Charlie Haeger (0-4, 8.53 ERA) is slated to get the ball for the Dodgers in that last matchup, with Scott Kazmir (7-5, 5.08 ERA) taking the mound for the Angels. Winless Haeger has been on the disabled list with a sprained toe, while Kazmir has picked up the victory in each of his last four outings.

The PGA Tour heads to Cromwall, Connecticut this week for its next tournament, the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. Padraig Harrington is the 12/1 Vegas favorite to win the Travelers Championship this week, with Hunter Mahan next at 16/1 odds, and Justin Rose at 18/1. Defending champion Kenny Perry and Adam Scott are both pegged at 20/1 odds to pick up the tournament trophy on Sunday, with Retief Goosen and Matt Kuchar at 22/1. Vijay Singh is well behind at 50/1 odds to win.
Finally, there's just one game on the WNBA schedule for Thursday, with Los Angeles at Washington. The Sparks (3-8 straight-up, 2-9 against-the-spread) were beaten 78-75 by Connecticut last time out despite Tina Thompson's team-high 24 points. Los Angeles is 0-5 on the road this season. The Mystics (7-4 SU, 7-3-1 ATS) beat Chicago 65-61 in overtime in their last contest. Katie Smith tossed in 17 points for Washington.
