The season must feel like it is over for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With an ugly loss against the Arizona State Sun Devils their playoff hopes are officially dashed barring a miracle.
The Fighting Irish stumbled out the gate and was down 34-10 at halftime. The team did not fold and instead they mounted an improbable comeback pulling within three points in the second half. They were unable to complete the come back and the main culprit was too many turnovers in crucial situations to include a late pick six tossed by signal caller Everett Golston.
Like many teams in the country, if you have turnovers you just can’t win. Notre Dame is 12-0 since the start of last season when it has one or fewer turnovers and 4-5 when it has two or more, including the Irish’s loss to Florida State this season. This is a problem that they will have to fix before playing against Northwestern who are also off a loss.
Northwestern is off a loss against the Michigan Wolverines but they proved that they will go all out to win a football game although they have just three wins on the season. They scored late in the game against the Wolverines and had a chance to tie it with an extra point. Instead of going for the tie, they went for the win. The two point conversion attempt failed miserably but it showed that the Wildcats are going for the win. They will get up for a game against the Fighting Irish and will be ready to lay it on the line as big underdogs.
The latest college football betting trends for the game indicate that both teams have some negative football betting angles in their favor. The Wildcats are 0-5 against the spread (ATS) in their last 5 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game and 3-12 against the number when playing against a team with a winning record. The Fighting Irish are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game, 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game and just 3-7-1 against the number when they play against a team with a losing record.
The Fighting Irish cannot afford to take a scrappy Northwestern team lightly. Anything but an impressive win against a losing team could send the Fighting Irish further down the college football rankings.
