NHL Week 18 Betting Tips
- Updated: January 28, 2014
This is the final full week of National Hockey League action before the Olympic break, which will begin on Sunday, Feb. 9 and last until Feb. 26.
Tuesday’s slate is a large one with 11 games, including an important Eastern Conference match-up between the Ottawa Senators and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets have climbed right back into the playoff hunt after winning nine of their last 12 games and they have done so as a result of their offense, scoring 40 goals over those 12 games. The Senators have been a decent team to back going over the total for much of the season and there’s no reason to stop now. The oddsmakers have put a 5.5 on the game and it still looks to be an over play.
Also on Tuesday, the Washington Capitals visit the Buffalo Sabres in a game not for the weak of heart, as both teams are struggling right now. Buffalo has been bad all season, while the Capitals’ slide has been a bit more recent. Despite all of the attention Washington gets for being an offensive team, the Capitals have played under the total more often than they have gone over this season and that should continue against the Sabres, who rank last in the league in goals by a fair margin. A decent under play even if there is the expected 5 on the game.
Jumping ahead to Saturday, the Minnesota Wild visit the Calgary Flames and the Wild are still in playoff contention despite having scoring problems all season. The Wild have received solid goaltending most of the year, keeping them in many games they probably shouldn’t be in. The Flames also have scoring problems, but also have trouble keeping the puck out of their net. Playing Minnesota should help a bit in that regard, making the game worth an under play, even though it’s likely the total will be 5.
