NHL – TRENDS OF THE DAY
After a full slate of hockey games on Tuesday, the National Hockey League sees a bit of a slow down as there are just two games on tap for Wednesday night. One of these games, the Ottawa Senators vs. the Detroit Red Wings, pits two teams that have been a bit of a disappointment this season. The other, the Chicago Black Hawks vs. the New York Rangers, features two teams that are need of a win if they are going to push to earn a spot in the playoffs.
Games to Watch
- Ottawa Senators (+115) vs. Detroit Red Wings (-135), O/U 5.5
This matchup pits two of the bigger disappointments in the National Hockey League this season. Detroit is fifth in Atlantic Division, while Ottawa is seventh. These teams have been good for so long, that to see them in this position is more than just a surprise. In addition, the Senators are far too deep to be in this position.
Ottawa has had it rough on the road this season, going 5-10-1 and they are just 3-7 in their last 10 games, including a 5-0 loss to Boston in their last game, a December matchup at home. They will enter this contest with four days of rest but, surprisingly, that has not favored them this season. The Senators are just 1-4 in their last five games where they have had three or more days rest between contests. They are also 1-4 in their last 5 games against Eastern Conference teams and 1-6 in their last 7 games following a game where they gave up 5 or more goals. The Senators have gone under in their last four road games verse teams with a losing record, and have gone under in six of their last eight games against the Atlantic Division foes.
Detroit is 8-6-5 at home this season and has gone 4-4-2 in their last 10, and enter this game as winners of two straight, including a 4-1 win over Pittsburgh on New Year’s Eve. This is also the Red Wings first game of 2018. Despite the two wins in a row, the Red Wings are only 5-13 in their last 18 games overall and are 3-9 in their last 12 games following a contest where they gave up two or fewer games to their previous opponent, although it should be noted that one of those three wins came against Pittsburgh, following a game where they held the New York Rangers to two goals in a 3-2 victory. Detroit has gone under in each of their last four games, including going under in each of their five home games. The Red Wings have gone under in 18 of their last 25 games against Eastern Conference foes.
In the last five games between these two teams, the total has gone under in four of those contests. No need to think that trend is ending in this contest. The home team has won six of the last eight meetings and Ottawa has only won three of the last 10. Sounds like the Red Wings will be soaring in this one as well.
- Chicago Black Hawks (+130) vs. New York Rangers (-150), O/U 5.5
Chicago is 8-9-3 on the road this season, and they are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games. Chicago has gone 5-1 in their last 6 games when they have had 2 days rest before a contest. The Blackhawks are 10-4 against Metropolitan Division opponents in their last 14 games, but are only 3-9 in their last 12 against teams with a winning record. Chicago is 1-4 overall in their last five games. They have gone under in six of their last seven against Eastern Conference teams and have gone under in five of the last seven in contests against winning teams.
New York is 15-6-1 at home and have gone 5-2-3 in their last 10 games. The Rangers have won 13 of their last 16 games at home and are 11-5 in their last 16 against teams with a winning record. The Rangers have gone under in each of their last four games and have gone under in each of their last four games against teams with a losing record.
New York has won four of the last five games between these two teams and looks to be a good bet in this one as well. The total has gone under in six of the last nine games between these two teams. Look for this contest to go under as well.
