Well, everybody expected that the New York Jets might go away very quietly this season, but that hasn’t been the case at all. In fact, with a record just one game under the .500 mark, they can consider themselves to be contenders for a wild-card spot. Of course, the have to take care of business against slumping teams, such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have let things slip away quickly. This game will begin at 1 PM ET on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium, and while CBS televises it on a regional basis, VietBet customers will have a chance to place wagers in real time, through the magic of Live Betting Ultra.
The Jets started the season rather inauspiciously, losing road games at Buffalo (21-12) and Oakland (45-20), but then the defense started coming on strong, and when the team posted three straight victories, the press in the New York area started to get more serious about them. Serious, to the point where a subsequent three-game losing streak brought great disappointment. But last Thursday these Jets rebounded in a big way, defeating the Buffalo Bills 34-21 and making a big statement on the ground, with 194 yards. This came on the heels of some complaints from veteran Matt Forte, who thought that they would have done a lot better against the Atlanta Falcons if they had made the ground attack the focus of the game plan.
In this contest, the Jets will encounter their quarterback from the last two seasons. Ryan Fitzpatrick has seemingly been with every team in the NFL, and he hooked on with Tampa Bay as Jameis Winston’s backup. Now that Winston is going to miss at least two games with a shoulder injury, Fitzpatrick is in the driver’s seat once again. He will be without his top receiver, as Mike Evans is on a one-game suspension for an unnecessary hit on New Orleans defensive back Marshon Lattimore.
In the odds at VietBet upon which we will make our NFL picks for this game, the Jets are the favorites on the road:
New York Jets -2.5 (-115)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers +2.5 (-105)
Over 43 points -110
Under 43 points -110
Clearly the Jets have a pretty good idea of what Fitzpatrick can do, and you have to remember that the pass rush really came alive against Buffalo, with seven sacks of an elusive guy (Tyrod Taylor). New York has posted decent defensive numbers, although they have given up 19 touchdown passes. But they are much better on third down the Tampa Bay is; the Buccaneers are the worst in the NFL, allowing opponents to convert 49.5% of the time.
Tampa Bay is currently on a five-game losing streak, and they were downright non-competitive last weekend with just 200 offensive yards, as New Orleans beat them by a 30-10 score. So a loss here would pretty much end their season, making the return of Winston almost moot. The Bucs have scored one touchdown on offense over the last eight quarters, and even though they have really needed something special out of Doug Martin, who sat out the first four games with a suspension, they haven’t really gotten it, as he averaged just 3.5 yards a carry.
The Buccaneers have recorded just eight sacks this season, that will be nothing other than a help to Josh McCown, who amazingly has completed 70.4% of his passes the season while still averaging over seven yards an attempt. He’s given this team much better service than anticipated, kind of reminiscent of what Fitzpatrick did a couple of years ago as the Jets got very close to making the playoffs. We’re not sure Todd Bowles his team is going to have that kind of result this time around, but they are putting money in the pockets of their backers, with a 6-0-1 ATS record over the last seven games. We think they’ll continue, so we’re laying the number with the Jets.
