For our NFL Pick of the Week, we’ll take a look at the game between the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers, where the Packers are favored by 14 and the total on the game is 43.5. Yes, I’m really going to take Arizona, here, as anybody who has followed me over the years has already guessed.
The Cardinals were probably a little too quick to get rid of Sam Bradford and turn things over to Josh Rosen, who isn’t quite ready to be a starting quarterback just yet. He’s thrown interceptions in six straight games and last week threw for just 105 yards in a 45-10 loss, so it wasn’t as though the Cardinals didn’t need to throw the ball to get back in the game.
Arizona doesn’t run the ball particularly well, and they certainly don’t throw the ball, but one thing they do is play hard after getting waxed, which happens now and then. But the Cardinals are 8-2 against the spread following a 20-point loss dating back to 2012 and have pulled off four outright victories as underdogs, so the boys from the desert do have a little pride. It’s happened twice already this season and Arizona responded with a 16-14 loss to the Bears and knocked off the 49ers.
The Packers are 4-6-1 and have an outside shot at the playoffs, but will have to win out and have the Falcons and Bears up next after this game, which they would probably be happy to get out of with a win and move forward.
The Packers aren’t the team they have been in the past and frustration is beginning to show a bit, as things are making their way to the press that wouldn’t have in previous years and quite frankly, the Packers are still getting by on reputation a little bit, at least as far as the spread goes, because teams with four wins just aren’t favored by this many points. Going back to 1990, teams in Week 12 or later with four or fewer wins have been favored by double digits twice. The Texans were the last in 2013 and you’d have to go all the back in 1991 to find the other.
The Packers are capable of taking it to the Cardinals and could very well do so, but think the Cardinals can at least stay in the game and stay under the number, so will grab the points here.
