The bad news for the Washington Redskins is that they have lost three of their last four games after starting 2-0. The good news for the Redskins is that no one has run away with the NFC East, so they still have a chance to get their act together. Buffalo wasn’t expected to do anything positive this year, but the team has had a great 4-2 start to the year. The Bills picked up a big win over New England at home earlier this year. Can Buffalo keep their hot start going or will Washington get back on track?
Rex Grossman has spent several days this week hospitalized with pneumonia. Grossman had been benched for John Beck in the last couple games, but Beck hasn’t been very good either. Beck is a little more consistent than Grossman, and he doesn’t take as many chances with the ball. The Redskins success early in the season came when they were able to run the ball. They have struggled the last few weeks when they haven’t been able to run it effectively. Tim Hightower went down with a season ending injury last week, which means Ryan Torain and Roy Helu will likely share duties in the backfield.
Washington’s defense is much improved from last year. The Redskins have been doing a nice job keeping their opponents out of the end zone. DeAngelo Hall and Josh Wilson give the Redskins a pair of solid cornerbacks. Bryan Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan give the team two great pass rushers off the edge. This defense still has some questions, but they are quickly improving.
Ryan Fitzpatrick was best known for being “that quarterback from Harvard” for quite a while, but now his terrific play on the field is starting to turn some heads. Fitzpatrick is completing 66% of his passes, and he has an impressive quarterback rating of 95.3. Fred Jackson has been one of the best running backs in the NFL this year. Jackson is averaging an amazing 5.7 yards per carry, and he already has six touchdowns. Jackson also has 24 receptions out of the backfield this season. Steve Johnson has quickly emerged as a deep threat that helps the Bills stretch the defense.
Buffalo’s defense was among the worst in the NFL last year. The Bills are still giving up a lot of yards this year, but they have been doing a little better at keeping teams out of the end zone. This is an opportunistic defense, but they really do need to improve Shawne Merriman is out for the season with an Achilles injury, so the unit lost one of its best play makers. Marcell Dareus needs to make a big impact for this team the rest of the year.
The Bills have a lot of weapons offensively right now. Jackson isn’t getting the credit he deserves, but he is one of the best offensive play makers in the league at this point. The Redskins simply don’t have enough offense to keep up with the Bills.
