The National Football League hands out a ton of awards at the end of each season, and most of those are given to the top players. That’s not always the case, though, as the NFL Coach of the Year is another prestigious award.
Betting odds for this market have been out since the beginning of the season, and the odds have been updating throughout the first few weeks. While it is still too early to definitively pick a winner, the top options are starting to emerge.
Here is a quick breakdown of some of the top options when it comes to the NFL Coach of the Year in 2023.
Early Betting Odds Favorites
Even though this award is technically given to the coach who has done the best job each year, you have to look at team performance when handicapping the betting options. There are a few teams that have burst onto the scene to begin the year, and the coaches of those teams are getting a ton of early praise.
Dan Campbell of the 4-1 Detroit Lions is the current betting favorite to win this award, as he has odds set at +350 at BetDSI. Campbell has been among the favorites since the odds were released and will stay there as long as his team continues to win games.
Mike McDaniel of the 4-1 Miami Dolphins is next on the list at +475, and he has been tremendous this season as well. McDaniel has the Dolphins playing great on offense, and they look like a threat to win the title.
The other coach that you could consider among the favorites is Kyle Shanahan at +500 at BetDSI. All Shanahan has done is guide the 49ers to a perfect 5-0 start this season, and that team hasn’t really been challenged through the first five games of the year.
Time to Make a Move
Just like with any futures betting market, the odds can always change in a hurry based on what happens on the field. There is still a long season left, and there will be at least a few teams that end up surprising the rest of the league when the dust settles.
Here are some odds for the top contenders in this race, and these are the coaches to keep your eye on:
- Shane Steichen +900
- DeMeco Ryans +1400
- Arthur Smith +1600
- Todd Bowles +1800
- Mike Tomlin +2000
- Sean McVay +2000
Those six coaches all have their teams currently playing some solid football this season, and a nice run will propel them up the standings as well. By the end of the year, the voters for this award won’t always just focus on the teams with the best overall records but rather on how teams did throughout the entirety of the season.
If you want to get some value when betting on this award, then you will get that from choosing one of the coaches off of this list.
Go With a Betting Favorite
Even though there is still a long way to go in the 2023 NFL season, you should probably focus on the three current betting favorites if you are going to wager on this market. Those top three choices are all extremely solid, and it’s hard to see any of them falling off at any point throughout the rest of the year.
Dan Campbell is going to win this award if he guides his Detroit Lions to the NFC North title, but that team still has some work to do. He would be the pick to make right now, but McDaniel and Shanahan will remain in the mix throughout the rest of the season.
