NFL Betting Lines Week 1: Giants and Jets Begin Quest to Host Super Bowl

nfl week 1 odds

For the first time, the Super Bowl will be held outdoors in a cold-weather area, and BetAnySports customers who follow the NFL betting lines know that the New York Giants and New York Jets both face different challenges, and to different degrees, as they vie to be a team that can host that game. The Jets are downtrodden at the moment, while the Giants appeared like underachievers last year, even though they posted the same regular season record that eventually led to a Super bowl title.

Let’s take a quick look at what these teams are about to encounter on the opening weekend of NFL play. Both games are scheduled for Sunday, September 8:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New York Jets (pick)
1 PM ET – MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ

Tampa Bay is a team that could make great strides this season. In Greg Schiano’s first year at the helm, the Bucs became a tough team to deal with in the trenches. They were able to run the ball effectively with rookie Doug Martin, who gained 1454 yards and a spot in the Pro Bowl. And no team in the NFL permitted fewer yards on the ground than the Buccaneers did, bit on a per-game and per-carry basis.

This just in – the Giants will have a better chance at hosting the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium than will the Jets. How much better? Well, while the Giants are priced at +1275 to make it to Super Bowl 48 at BetAnySports, the Jets are a longshot to say the least, at 80-to-1. Big questions for Rex Ryan: how will he execute his preferred “ground and pound” with limited weaponry on hand, and will Geno Smith actually get an opportunity to snatch the starting quarterback job from Mark Sanchez, who threw 18 interceptions last season?

Oh,.one last thing we almost neglected to mention. The reason the Bucs failed to make the playoffs with such great rushing defense was that they were woefully permissive through the air. So they went out on a limb and traded with the Jets for Darrelle Rivas, coming off a torn ACL. What kind of reception will he get in the Meadowlands?

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (-2.5)
8:30 PM ET – Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, TX

The Giants have not any problem beating the Cowboys in Arlington, but the rest of last season did not turn out so well. They struggled to their second straight 9-7 mark and seemed to give up in some games. Tom Coughlin now deals with transition on both sides of the ball, but not an overwhelming amount. Ahmad Bradshaw is gone, which mean the Giants will hope that Andre Brown can rebound from a broken leg and that David Wilson (+2200 in the NFL betting lines to lead the league in rushing) can become a legitimate speed back. The pass rush will face a downgrade, with Osi Umenyiora and Chris Canty having departed.

Maybe the biggest personnel move the Cowboys made was in the coaching staff, as Monte Kiffin now takes over as offensive coordinator. Kiffin’s “Tampa Bay” will now becomes the gospel in Dallas, the way it was through some great seasons with the Bucs. The Cowboys lost middle linebacker Dan Connor to the Giants, but their cornerbacks should be able to play in Kiffin’s scheme. Tony Romo (+1500 to have the most passing yards in the NFL props at BetAnySports) can not be a sitting duck in the pocket. That means the Cowboys have to be able to run the ball with some consistency, which in turn means that the physical well-being of DeMarco Murray (663 yards in a season shortened by injuries) is an absolute must.

Here are the rest of the NFL betting lines for Week 1 of action (Sunday unless otherwise specified):
