Game Overview

New York moved to 3-2 straight-up and 2-2-1 against the spread with a 41-27 victory over Cleveland last Sunday as a 7.5-point home favorite. Once again, this team dug itself an early hole with a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter, but quickly raced past the winless Browns for a relatively easy win. The total went OVER the 44-point line, but has stayed UNDER in three of its previous four games.

It has been feast or famine for Eli Manning and Co. all season long. The Giants are ranked second in the NFL in scoring with an average of 30.4 points a game, yet they only managed to put-up 17 points in a season-opening loss to Dallas at home and in a Week 4 loss to Philadelphia on the road.

San Francisco has been playing inspired ball ever since getting stunned in Week 3 on the road by Minnesota in a 24-13 loss as a 6.5-point favorite. The 49ers have racked-up 79 points in back-to-back victories over Buffalo and the New York Jets the past two weeks while giving-up a field goal in return. This run has raised their record to 4-1 both SU and ATS. The total has gone 2-2-1 in the five games.

While Alex Smith is off to a solid start at quarterback and Frank Gore has already rushed for 432 yards, it is San Francisco’s defense that has set the pace so far. It is ranked second in the NFL against the pass and in total yards allowed and first in scoring; giving-up an average of just 13.6 points a game. This could present some serious problems for a Giants’ offense that lives and dies by the big play.

New York’s problems this season have mainly come on the road and a trip all the way out to the West Coast to face the most complete team in the NFC will certainly not help its cause. Eli may be able to work his magic for a couple of scores, but in the end the 49ers prevail with a win that covers the 4.5 points. San Francisco 24     New York 17
