Game Overview

The New York Giants beat up on the Atlanta Falcons 24-2 en route to their Super Bowl win last year. Atlanta has the best record in the NFL, but the Falcons still really need a postseason victory. This one won’t get them over the hump, but you can bet that the Falcons still want some revenge for last year’s embarrassing playoff loss.

Game Overview:

The New York Giants have had an up and down season. New York has put together some of the most impressive performances in the league this year with dominating wins over San Francisco and Green Bay. At the same time, the Giants have also lost to the Bengals and Eagles. This time is a little hard to figure out, but Tom Coughlin has done a great job getting the team to play its best when it counts in the past and you have to expect that again this year. Eli Manning’s numbers are down a bit from a year ago, but he has still been a great player in the clutch.

The Giants are a much better team when they are able to run the ball. Ahmad Bradshaw is listed as questionable for this one, so keep an eye on his status. New York has a great passing attack with great weapons on the outside, but if they can keep the defense honest with the running game they are nearly unstoppable. The Giants are putting up 28.7 points per game this year. Defensively, the Giants have been great at forcing turnovers. Stevie Brown leads the way with seven big interceptions for the Giants. The front four are the best in the NFL at bringing the heat. New York is giving up 20.8 points per game this season.

The Atlanta Falcons are 11-2, but very few people seem to believe that this team really has a chance to win it all. Maybe it is the Falcons lack of playoff success, but games like last weekend at Carolina also don’t help opinions of this team. Carolina racked up 30 points in a 30-20 victory over the Falcons. Atlanta’s defense has been great at forcing turnovers, but you have to wonder if eventually the fact that they give up a lot of yards will catch up to them. Last week, they didn’t get any turnovers and the Panthers scored 30 points. John Abraham leads the team with ten sacks, and Thomas DeCoud has five interceptions to lead the team.

The Falcons offense has been very good this year. Matt Ryan has thrown for 3,932 yards so far this season. He is completing 68 percent of his passes. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have what may be the best group of pass catchers in the NFL. Roddy White, Julio Jones, and Tony Gonzalez are all capable of having a breakout game at any time. Atlanta is doing a nice job utilizing Jacquizz Rodgers out of the backfield in the passing game as well. The Falcons running game hasn’t been very good, and that is a concern moving forward.

Both defenses have relied too much on the takeaway this year. Look for these offenses to be able to put it in the end zone several times. I like the over.
