NCAA Football – Week 2
The Penn State Nittany Lions continue their tumultuous season on Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville in college football betting action, as they take on the Virginia Cavaliers.
Penn State really did get off to a good start to the season in the first half of its game against the Ohio Bobcats last week, racing out to a 14-3 lead. It really looked like matters were going to be just fine for the Big Ten reps in spite of all of the offseason problems, but in the second half, the team really did look terrible. Granted, we know that Ohio is one of the better mid-major teams in America, but there was still no excuse for the Nittany Lions to just fall apart like that. It was clear that the ground game was harmed without RB Silas Redd in the fold. QB Matt McGloin really did everything that he could. He threw for 260 yards and two TDs against a pick, but ultimately, he had to throw the ball 48 times, and the Nittany Lions aren’t going to be winning games when they have to throw it all that often. The defense really didn’t do all that well either, allowing 499 yards. Again, we do have to note that PSU isn’t the only team that is going to do that this year against Ohio, but this is still supposed to be a proud program. Even with so many fewer scholarship players, the Nittany Lions should be doing better than this.
Virginia had an amazing season very quietly last year. The team made a huge stink in the ACC, coming just one game shy of going to the conference championship game. However, the Cavaliers really have flown under the radar for the most part. QB Michael Rocco was never really considered one of those elite quarterbacks in the ACC, but in the end, he really might be a solid collegiate QB. Defensively, the last that we saw from the Cavvies last year, they allowed 38 to the Virginia Tech Hokies and 43 to the Auburn Tigers. Last week against the Richmond Spiders, that defense played well until the last few minutes of the game when the FCS representatives found their way into the end zone on a long drive after the outcome was long beyond doubt. UVA accounted for 545 yards against just the 266 for Richmond.
Had this game been played a year ago, it would have been a ridiculous flip of the script. Penn State would have easily been two touchdown favorites at the outset of the year like this. However, since that point, Penn State has been demoralized, and Virginia has really come on strong as one of the surprisingly good ACC teams. Now, there is no doubt which team is superior, and that superior team should be coming up with a dominating performance on Saturday afternoon. Virginia 27 – Penn State 10
