NCAA Football – Week 4

Two of the top mid-major teams in the nation are going to meet in what will surely be a BCS elimination game on ESPN’s Thursday Night College Football bettingfestivities, as the Boise State Broncos play host to the BYU Cougars.

We really thought that the Cougars would have been looking forward to this game, and we were right. They took the Utah Utes for granted, and now, whereas they at least had a shot of going to the BCS even with a loss in this game, that option is out the window. That being said, this isn’t nearly the only tough game that is left on the slate for BYU this year, but it is going to be the one played in the toughest spot. It is a short week for the Cougs, and they are going to have to play on the road in one of the most hostile environments they’ll be playing in all year. QB Riley Nelson is still the undisputed leader of this team, but he needs to play a heck of a lot better against Boise than he did against Utah last week. For the year, the senior has 735 yards and five scores against two picks, but he needs to do more than that for sure against a very tough Boise State defense. Remember that last week, the Cougars only just barely got to 300 yards for the whole game.

This is going to be the best measuring stick of a game that the Broncos have had all year long. It is a fairly comparable game against a team that has almost as much talent, but not so much talent that it would be just another romp of an MWC game. Last week’s win over the Miami Redhawks gave Boise its third straight cover dating back to last year’s bowl game. QB Joe Southwick and his offense put up 599 yards against the inferior MAC side, proving that this offense could still be lethal even with both RB Doug Martin and QB Kellen Moore gone. RB DJ Harper rumbled for 162 yards on just 16 carries, and he is clearly going to be the next in the great Boise State running backs that are able to put up yards by chunks at a time. Watch out for this defense as well, which is still very talented and has some legitimate NFL talent on it. It isn’t a mistake that teams are averaging just 344 yards and 14.5 points per game against the Broncos.

Football Prediction:

BYU might be able to hang in there if there is that much stock that has truly been put into this game. In the end, Boise State is going to be the victorious club, but it might not be able to snare the cover against this relatively large opening point spread. Boise State 27 – BYU 24
