NCAA Basketball Pick: Memphis vs. Georgetown Pick
- Updated: December 22, 2011
For the second time this year, college basketball betting action kicks off between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Memphis Tigers on Thursday night, but this time, instead of taking place in Hawaii, the Hoyas will host at the Verizon Center in our nation’s capitol.
The Tigers definitely didn’t do soft non-conference scheduling this year. The good news is that their strength of schedule right now is as tough as any team in the country, and their RPI won’t suffer as a result. That being said, there are only six wins so far this year, and losing this game is going to drop them to 6-5. Too many more losses in conference play this year, and all of a sudden, a spot in the NCAA Tournament won’t be guaranteed for a team that had tremendously high hopes this year. In the first game between these teams, we really didn’t see that prototypical well rounded scoring effort from the Tigers. Will Barton scored 23 and Joe Jackson scored 20, but the rest of the team was largely missing in action and didn’t put up nearly as many points as they are used to. The team was also killed on the defensive boards, and the size differential of these two teams really showed. Committing 17 turnovers, many of which came in the second half or in overtime were killers as well, especially knowing that there were only nine forced turnovers to counter those.
Meanwhile, the Hoyas really got on the map with their big time win over Memphis a few weeks ago, because at that time, the Tigers were thought to legitimately be one of the best ten or so teams in the country. Henry Sims had a mammoth game, scoring 24 points and coming down with eight boards, while Jason Clark knocked down four triples and went off for 26 points. At times, the knock on the Hoyas is that they just don’t have the well rounded scoring efforts of some of the other elite teams in the land. That being said, they have some big wins early in this season, including over the likes of these Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. For a Big East team to have a resume like that early in the year is impressive, and Head Coach John Thompson III knows if his team wins this game that eight wins in the Big East surely will be good enough to send G-Town dancing.

Memphis Tigers @ Georgetown Hoyas Keys To The Game: The Tigers just have to cut down on their mistakes. The shots will fall, especially from the outside. Georgetown needs to make sure that it uses its bigs to keep Memphis’ guards from driving the lane and getting easy buckets, and it needs to get away from a high octane transition game. If the Hoyas can take care of the basketball once again in this one against a sneakily good Memphis defense, they should have no problems walking away with a second big time win against the Tigers.
