The second day of NBA action of the New Year is a good one. Although there are only five games on the schedule there are some intriguing matchups. There is also a doubleheader on NBA TV for you to tune into if plan on watching hoops.
This is a breakdown for a few of the games on Tuesday with trends to track for January 2nd in the NBA.
Portland Trail Blazers at Cleveland Cavaliers
7 PM ET
While many believe that the Cleveland Cavaliers are the best team in the Eastern Conference, they certainly have not played like it lately. The Cavaliers enter this game against the Portland Trail Blazers on a three game losing streak. That streak came on the road as the Cavaliers recently returned from the West Coast. The Cavs played so poorly that it prompted LeBron James to call the road trip “trash” when asked about it. The Cavs lost all three games against the spread (ATS) and all three games went under the total. The Cavaliers will be happy to be home, but NBA bettors should beware as the Cavs are only 5-22-1 ATS in the last 28 home games. However, in the series with the Blazers the home team has dominated, which proves travel is an issue. Home teams in this series have won seven of the last eight meetings against the spread.
The Trail Blazers will be playing their third game in four nights and will have a quick turnaround as they enter this game. The Blazers were in Chicago to play the Bulls on New Year’s Day. Despite the quick turnaround, the Trail Blazers are 3-0-1 ATS in the last four games that they have played with no rest. The Cavaliers have three days off to shake the cobwebs off from the road trip. That would be a blessing for most teams, but the Cavs are 2-5 ATS in the last seven games that they have played when they have two days off. The Cavaliers have to be careful that they do not overlook the Trail Blazers as they could have one eye on the big game on Wednesday night against the Boston Celtics.
Memphis Grizzlies at LA Clippers
10:30 PM ET
The second game of the NBA doubleheader on NBA TV features the Memphis Grizzlies against the LA Clippers. The Grizzlies have won two out of three games and will be playing in their fifth straight road game. The Clippers have won three straight games and are one of the hottest teams in the league against the spread. The Clippers are an amazing 10-1-1 ATS run in the last 12 games that they have played. They will be looking for revenge against the Grizzlies, which beat them on Christmas Eve in Memphis 115-112. The difference in this game is that the Clippers will have some rest. In that loss the Clippers were exhausted because they played against the Houston Rockets the night before and scored 76 points in the second half. The rest in this game and the fact that the Clippers are getting healthy could make all the difference. The Clippers are 6-1 ATS in the last seven games playing with one days rest. The Grizzlies on the other hand are just 5-15-1 ATS in the last 21 games playing with one day off in between games. This game is crucial for the Clippers since they are only one game out of the loss column for the final playoff spot.
