NBA Pick: New York Knicks @ Washington Wizards Preview

Washington Wizards

Bet at 5dimes

The Washington Wizards are playing at least remotely better ball right now, and they are going to try to beat the NBA odds against the New York Knicks at the Verizon Center on Wednesday night.

New York was able to take down the Utah Jazz on Monday night to get to its 10th win of the season. The team is still in a bad place though, competing for the bottom playoff spots in the lowly Eastern Conference. Nothing is guaranteed, especially with the emergence of the Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers this year, and more losses in games like this one could put Head Coach Mike D’Antoni in a heck of a lot of trouble. The new man of the hour for the Knicks is Jeremy Lin. The former Harvard guard was rarely used for most of the season before coming off of the bench to score 25 against the New Jersey Nets two games ago. He followed that up by scoring 28 in 45 minutes against the Jazz two nights later. He and Iman Shumpert are now running the point for the most part for the Knicks, which has really left Toney Douglas, the team’s original starting point guard, without much of a role on the team. He might be called upon more in this one though, if both Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony can’t play. Melo has a groin injury that has him listed as questionable, while Stoudemire is dealing with the death of his brother and might not be back to the Knicks in time for this one.

Washington was really struggling offensively this year, but now that Flip Saunders is gone, the team is starting to at least look competent and might be able to beat teams like this one with at least some form of regularity. With Rashard Lewis, Andray Blatche, and Ronny Turiaf all out of the fold, the Wiz knocked off the Toronto Raptors in OT on Monday night. It was all thanks to John Wall, Nick Young, and Trevor Booker, who combined to score a whopping 79 points between them. All of them played at least 41 minutes though, and it is a good thing that Washington has the day off for these three to get a breather before getting back to it on Wednesday. Lewis has a slight knee injury and is listed as day-to-day, and it would help dramatically if he could get back into the lineup to replace either Booker or Chris Singleton in the starting lineup.

The Final Word: Even if Melo and Stoudemire do end up playing, we really just don’t trust the Knicks. They are likely going to be the favorites in this game if they are at full strength, and we don’t buy it. Washington hasn’t covered a spread since February 1st, but the team is looking better and better as the days go by, especially offensively. Back the Wiz to notch another ‘W’ to pick up their first winning streak of the season.
