For the baseball purist, it really doesn’t get a whole lot better than the American League Divisional Series between the Yankees and the Red Sox. Boston comes into it as a -155 favorite and the Yankees are +135, which probably seems a bit low at first glance, but when you look at things a little more closely, is probably pretty close to where it should be.
Both teams put up some solid offensive numbers. The Red Sox get a slight advantage, but when you account for Aaron Judge missing much of the season, the two teams are pretty close offensively and you can’t look at one team and give them much of an edge over the other. The Yankees hit left-handers even better, which could prove to be a key in this series, where New York will see David Price and Sale again if it goes to a Game 5.
Happ doesn’t have anything near the reputation of Sale, nor has he had anything that resembles Sale’s career, but he has pretty much matched him in the stats column since he came over to the Yankees and could play a big part of the series, especially if it goes to Game 5. Sale had a couple of solid starts against the Yankees this season, but he also had 25 runs of support in two games, making it a lot easier to pitch.
The Yankees fared better with Tanaka on the road this season, going 10-6, and allowing fewer runs, while Price quietly had a pretty solid season, with the Sox going 13-3 in his home starts.
Severino was better at home this season and he’ll likely face Porcello in Game 3, where the Yanks appear to have the edge, so an early split for the Yankees would be huge in this series.
If there’s a team who would appear to be a good candidate for the “bullpen” game, it’s the Yankees, who have some solid relief pitchers and could go that route if needed and depending on where the series stands could be an option for Game 4.
The Red Sox had the better season and are probably the better team, but certainly not enough to be -155 in this one, as a more accurate price would probably be -120 and even money for the Yankees.
Will go ahead and take the Yankees as fairly good sized underdogs in this one, which should be another good series between these two teams.
