MLB Pick: Red Sox vs. Orioles
- Updated: April 27, 2011
Moneyline: Red Sox (-150) Orioles (+140)
Starting Pitchers: Red Sox (Beckett) Orioles (Guthrie)
The Red Sox might have started the season out horribly, but lately they are showing everyone why they were the favorite to win the American League East. Boston swept the Angeles in Los Angeles, but now they are back to Baltimore to face a divisional foe. Baltimore is going the opposite direction, and they have lost eight of their last ten games overall. Both Beckett and Guthrie have pitched well this year, but which team will have the upper hand in this one?
The Red Sox were talked about frequently after the first week of the year, but not in the way they had hoped. Boston dropped their first six games, but they have gotten red hot of late. A lineup with Crawford, Youkilis, Ellsbury, Gonzalez, Ortiz, Pedroia, and others can’t be expected to struggle for too long. Adrian Gonzalez currently leads the Red Sox in hitting, but his average is just .282. I think this means there is plenty more room for improvement offensively. Defensively the Red Sox have been outstanding. Boston has made just six errors, which is third best in all of baseball. Josh Beckett will be on the mound in this one, and he has been outstanding this year. Beckett has an ERA of just 1.93 in his four starts this season.
The Baltimore Orioles have actually lost 11 of their last 13 games overall. Baltimore wasn’t necessarily expected to have a terrific pitching staff this year, but their lineup was expected to produce. So far this year, the Orioles offense has been one of the worst in baseball. Baltimore is batting just .230 as a team. They also only have four stolen bases, which is last in all of baseball. Adam Jones, Derrek Lee, Nick Markakis, and Mark Reynolds are all guys who need to pick up their production if the Orioles are going to be competitive this year. Jeremy Guthrie has pitched very well so far this season. Guthrie has an ERA of just 3.12, and three of his four starts have been quality starts.
The Orioles are just 2-12 in Guthrie’s last 14 starts against the Red Sox. On the other hand, the Red Sox are 7-3 in Beckett’s last 10 starts in Baltimore. I think the Red Sox will bounce back from their series opening loss with a win here.
