MLB Betting: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Pick 5/15/11
- Updated: May 15, 2011
Sunday Night Baseball betting action doesn’t get any better than this. The Boston Red Sox are going to be taking on the New York Yankees in the Bronx in a nationally televised MLB betting affair that really could go either way, and sparks are almost always certain to fly when these two hook up on the diamond.
It’s hard to think that the Red Sox haven’t been above .500 this season, They’ve come close time and time before, but they have yet to get over the hump. This could be the first time that they have been at .500 since Opening Day as well. Give the Sox credit. They have won four of the five meetings this year between these two behemoths, and they are 6-1 in their last seven and 11-3 in their last 14. Now, they have Jon Lester on the mound, one of the most feared lefthanders that the game has to offer. Lester, who is 6-1 with a 3.28 ERA in his career against the men in pinstripes, is coming off of his worst start of the year. He allowed five runs in 5.1 innings of work against the Toronto Blue Jays. Still, this is still a man that is 4-1 on the year, and he has fantastic splits at a 2.96 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and .229 batting average against. Lester’s strikeout rate is a tad down, as he has just 51 in 51.2 innings of work, which is low considering that his K/9 ratio has been over 9.00 for the majority of his career.
The Yankees have to be very, very careful right now. They just aren’t in the greatest spot in the world in the AL East, they have already been run down by the Tampa Bay Rays, and they could be falling into even worse shape in the near future as well. An old, beaten up looking pitching staff could look vulnerable again this Sunday with 34 year old Freddy Garcia on the bump. Garcia has only allowed more than one earned run twice in this season six outings (five of which have been starts). He’s got a rock solid 2.61 ERA and batters are only hitting .239 against him. Still, these numbers are a bit deceiving, as this is a pitcher that typically pitches to contact, and against this Boston lineup, that could be brutal. Sure, Garcia has an 8-2 record in his career against the Red Sox. That’s fantastic. However, he has a 4.44 ERA in 101.1 career innings of work against them, and his ERA at Yankee Stadium for his career is over 4.00.
Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Pick: Manager Terry Francona and the rest of Red Sox Nation probably realizes the real importance of this game. A sweep in the Bronx would be huge for a team that badly needed a boost. We like the way that Boston is playing right now, and we know that it will be very, very hard for the Yanks to get a win, even at home. We always hate going against New York in the Big Apple, but in this case, we have to make our MLB picks on the Red Sox -120.
