One of the Big Ten’s oldest rivalries will commence when the Michigan State Spartans play host to the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday night at 7:00 ET on ESPN inside the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. The Wolverines got the best of the Spartans 58-57 in the last meeting on March 3rd, 2013 in Ann Arbor.
Michigan comes into this game at 14-4 SU winners in nine of its last 10 contests. The No. 21 Wolverines pulled a small upset on Wednesday night as they defeated the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes 75-67 at home to run their conference record to a perfect 6-0 on the year. Michigan’s top performer was G Nik Stauskas who had 26 points, five rebounds, and five assists in the win. The sophomore is averaging 18.0 points and 3.8 assists per game for the Wolverines who got their eighth straight victory Wednesday. Michigan F Glenn Robinson III chipped in 14 points and nine boards making it three straight games in which he scored in double figures and posted at least seven rebounds. The Wolverines come into this contest just 2-3 ATS on the road this season, but have covered two of their three conference road games. Michigan is 9-6-1 ATS overall this season as they’re trying to keep stringing wins together to improve their ranking. It’s a tall order to ask the Wolverines to cover, much less beat two Top 10 teams in a matter of four days, but that is what they are trying to accomplish against arch-rival Michigan State in this one.
Michigan State is having an outstanding season at 18-1 SU and it plays in front of one of the most raucous crowds in all of the Big Ten who will surely be amped up to see rival Michigan. The No.3 ranked Spartans held off a serious threat from the Indiana Hoosiers on Tuesday as they escaped with a 71-66 win on their home floor. Sophomore G Gary Harris had a big night for Sparty putting up 24 points and was on fire making four of his six three point attempts. Harris is Michigan State’s leading scorer averaging 18.3 points per game. The Spartans have not been great at covering spreads at home they’re just 4-5 ATS to this point. The last time Michigan State hosted Michigan it turned into a blood bath for the Wolverines who were blown out 75-52 on February 12th, 2013. Harris was a key player for the Spartans in that game scoring 17 points and he will need to do that again if his team is to prevail on Saturday.
We expect to see a back and forth competitive basketball game from both sides in this one. Michigan State’s inability to cover spreads at home has us just a little more than worried about their chances of beating a fired up Michigan squad. Look for the Wolverines to get another big performance from Stauskas and Robinson III to pull another upset on Saturday and keep a perfect record in the conference. b>Michigan 76 – Michigan State 75
