The Tulsa Golden Hurricane were once considered one of the favorites on the odds to win Conference USA. They have turned out to be tremendous disappointments though, and they are welcoming one of the teams likely to win the league title to town this week in the Marshall Thundering Herd.
History says that Marshall is going to struggle in this game, as it has never beaten Tulsa in its time in which these two have shared a conference. That said, history also says that Marshall shouldn’t be 6-3 and perhaps on the way to hosting the conference title game for the first time ever either. The offense for the Thundering Herd has started to really take shape, and in the last three games alone, the team has put up 56, 61, and 49 points. In these three efforts, QB Rakeem Cato has put up 11 TDs against just one pick, and he has averaged nearly 10 yards per pass attempt in that stretch as well. If Marshall is moving the ball like that, there is no doubt that it is going to win a heck of a lot of games. Its defense has shown vulnerability at times, but the truth of the matter is that this has been a fantastic enough offense that it hasn’t made much of a difference.
It’s not often that the Tulsa offense struggles to get anything going, but this year, the team ranks just 107th land in total scoring at 20.6 points per game. What’s happening is that a bad defense that has been covered up year after year by a good offense is finally getting exposed for what it is, and losses are starting to pile up. The team is allowing 34.0 points per game this season, and though some of that has been the product of a tough out of conference schedule, the fact of the matter is that there has only been one win in five tries in conference games this season as well. Last week’s 58-24 loss at the hands of the East Carolina Pirates on the road was probably a good representation of what we are going to see in this one, especially if RB Trey Watts and his 857 yards and seven total touchdowns doesn’t run wild.
That said, this is a whole heck of a lot of points to be giving the Golden Hurricane in this one. As we stated at the outset, this is a series that has traditionally gone the way of Tulsa, and though we don’t think that this one is going to be won, there is a great chance that it is ultimately covered. Freshman QB Dane Evans could be set to have a big coming out party even though he has struggled thus far on the season. Expect a high scoring relatively close game decided by around 10 points.
